"The Immigrant: Thomas Burgess of Sandwich, Massachusetts" Thomas, the immigrant, is sometimes thought to have come to Salem, Massachusetts, with his wife, Dorothy, andhis young family in 1630. A stone set by the grave of John Burgess, Jr. (John, Joseph, John, Thomas) in Center Cem., Rochester, reads 'Descendant of Thomas Burgess the pilgrim who landed at Salem 1630' ... A land record dated July3, 1637, shows that he [Thomas] forfeited acreage assigned him at Duxbury, in order to settle the same year at Sandwich. There, he and his family lived at the western end of town, which later became part of the township of Bourne, in the area now called Sagamore. He became a large landowner in Sandwich and serve the town in many capacities.
Thomas, his wife Dorothy, their only daughter, Elizabeth (Burgess) Perry, and her husband, Ezra Perry, are buried quite close together near the brow of the hill in the Old Burying Ground on Grove Street in Sandwich.

Thomas Burgess arrived with his wife in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1630, at the age of 27, and remained for a time in the adjoining community of Lynn, about ten milesnortheast of Boston. (They are believed to have arrived on the ship 'The Blessing of the Bay'.) A section of land was assigned to him, 3 July 1637, in Duxbury, 30 miles south of Boston; but in the same year there appeared on the map, 64 miles south of Boston, the township of Sandwich, in the colony of Plymouth, to which he moved the following year, making his permanent abode in that section of the township which has come to be known as Sagamore... He was one of the original eleven male members of the first Congregational Church in Sandwich and was known among his contemporaries as "Goodman Burgess." Burial Notes: His grave was honored by amonumental slab imported from England. "This was the only monument set up for any Pilgrim of the first generation." (Otis) The stones of Thomas and Dorothy were restored by descendants in 1917 and in 1994 were called "marvelously legible." The cemetery is situated almost directly across the mill pond fromthe Thornton W. Burgess (Jr.) Museum.

[6974] Peter the Cruel (Spanish Pedro el cruel) (1334-1369), king of Castile andLeón (1350-1369), the son of King Alfonso XI, born in Burgos. Peter owes his sobriquet the Cruel to his ready use of murder and execution to eliminate his political opponents, including, reportedly, several of his ambitious half brothers. His principal conflict was with his older halfbrother, Henry of Trastamara, who also claimed the throne. Henry enlisted the aid of King Charles V of France, who in 1365 sent troops through Spain under the command of Bertrand Du Guesclin. Overthrown, Peter left thecountry and requested aid from Edward III of England,at that time engaged in fighting the Hundred Years' War with France; Edward sent an army commanded by his son Edward, Prince of Wales, known as the Black Prince.The forces of Peter and Edward defeated those of Henry, the French, and other allies at the Battle of Nájera in 1367, and Henry fled to France.Political differences between Peter and Edward resulted in the latter's withdrawal from Spain with his army. Henry then hastened back and with DuGuesclin's help engaged Peter and his supporters in a civil war. [5358] Thomas Moorman was married twice, first to Rachel, daughter of Christopher Clark, and secondly to Elizabeth, daughter of Robert and Mourning Adams. He died in 1787, and left one son, Robert, who died in 1813, whose widow, Dorothy, became the wife of John T. Holman, and whose children were Dorothy, the wife of James L. Neville, Mary, the wife of Eli Tutwiler, Elizabeth Ann, the wife of Robert L. Jefferson, and Robert J. Charles married Judith, daughter of William Moon. Robert married Sarah, another daughter of William Moon, and had eight children, of whom Mary was the wife of William Roper, and Elizabeth the wife of Benjamin Johnson, of Locust Hill on James River; these last were the parents of Janet, the wife of Austin M. Appling, Sarah, the wife of John Darneille, Louisiana, the wife of Edwin H. Gooch, and Dorothy, the wife of William A. Turner. Robert Moorman sold his land on Totier Creek to John Harris in 1792, and with the view of emigrating to South Carolina, appointed John Hudson and William Roper his attorneys in fact. Achilles married Mary, daughter of Robert and Mourning Adams, and removed to Bedford County. The land on Mechunk, which came to the wives of Thomas and Achilles from their father, Robert Adams, was purchased by Dr. George Gilmer, of Pen Park.
