U.S. President Theodore "Teddy Rough Rider" Roosevelt is a descendant.
He was the founder of the family in America and left Holland about 1644to better himself spiritually and financially. "After many days in thesteerage of a slow-sailing vessel, he landed at what was then called NewAmsterdam, at the foot of Manhattan Island. He was a typical settler, orimmigrant, much the same asmany who yearly come to our shores and aregiven the freedom of the country toprove themselves good citizens orfailures, thrifty or shiftless, the foundersofAmerican families orburdens to the state. It was his fortune to found a great, a useful, anda patriotic American family, of untold value to the state and the nation. From that time to the next seven generations every one of the Rooseveltswas born on Manhattan Island, and for seven generations Roosevelts, fatherand son, have from the same district in New York represented thepeople in thecity council, the State Assembly and the United StatesCongress. In Theodore Roosevelt's ancestry are found soldiers andpolitical leaders, merchants, judges, planters and philanthropists.During the Revolution some of the family servedacceptably, though withoutspecial distinction, in the Continental army. Others rendered service inthe Continental Congress or in various local legislatures. There wereancestors of Theodore Roosevelt both in the North and in the Southduringthe Revolutionary period. Those in the North were for the most partmerchants; those in the South planters."
