ANDREW MESSENGER III probably born about 1650. In 1672, ANDREW MESSENGER III moved to Norwalk, Connecticut from his parents home in Jamaica, Long Island, New York. Since he was a surveyor, he probably moved there for the reason that his brother-in-law, THOMAS BENEDICT, was also a surveyor with whom he may have worked. At about this time, Andrew purchased property there, as in 1673 his estate was valued at £25.
ANDREW MESSEMGER III married REBECCA PICKETT ST. JOHN, the widow of James St. John in 1685. REBECCA PICKETT was the daughter of JOHN and MARGARET PICKETT of Stratford, Connecticut. They had no children.
REBECCA PICKETT MESSENGER died May 9, 1684.
ANDREW MESSENGER III then married RACHEL HAYES. They had no children either.
After Andrew's brother-in-law, THOMAS BENEDICT JR. died in early 1688\9, he along with THOMAS BENEDICT SR. and SAMUEL HAYES took the estate inventory on February 22, 1688\9. Thomas Benedict Sr. was administrator, but with the advice of Andrew Messenger and Samuel Hayes. A year later, Thomas Benedict Sr. died and it fell to Andrew Messenger and Samuel Hayes to administer.
Andrew was chosen as Deputy from 1691 to 1702 in Norwalk. It was this Andrew who gave bond with his second cousin, Thomas Messenger on January 1, 1717\8, in the administration of the late Jabez Crowell estate of Fairfield, Connecticut as previously mentioned under Henry Messinger.
Andrew made a Will dated August 19, 1727, which was proved on November 9, 1730. He bequeathed to his wife, Rachel : cousin Zachariah Mills Sr. of Bedford, Westchester, County, cousins, Sam Messenger, son of M. John Messenger of Jamaica, Long Island and Nehemiah Messenger, second son of M. Dan Messenger of Hartford. Gave £20 to Abigail Messenger, younger sister to said Sam Messenger and gave 40 shillings to his Executors, John Bartlet and Thomas Fitch Jr. of Norwalk. His widow, Rachel, also made a Will dated April 7, 1738 which was proved on September 1, 1740. There were no children. Her Will, when carried out brought freedom to her two Negro slaves, Moll, a Negro woman and Michael, a slave boy. She bequeathed to relatives: mentioned a cousin, Thomas Hayes and her two brothers, Samuel and James Hayes, also to John, Nathaniel and Eleazer Boughten. She gave half the residue of her estate to brother, Sam Hayes and a quarter to brother, James Hayes and a quarter to the Boughtens and appointed her brother James Hayes and friend, Mr. Samuel Fitch as Executors. When Rachel's estate was settled it took £135 to buy Moll's freedom and £15 to supply Michael with care until age 21.
The St. John estate came into the family of this Andrew Messenger, because his first wife, REBECCA PICKETT ST. JOHN had neither St. John or Messenger children. Andrew's property eventually went to two grand nephews, Nehemiah Messenger of Hartford, Connecticut and Samuel Messenger of Long Island. When these two sold the property, the purchaser had to buy the St. John interest to clear the title.
ANDREW MESSENGER III died prior to November 9, 1730.
RACHEL HAYES MESSENGER died prior to September 1, 1740.
