From the research of Susan Canney:
He came on the "Hopewell" in 1635. He emigrated with his wife Prudence Clapp, settling in Dorchester. He was called brother-in-law in the will of her brother John in 1655.
Edward was a respected man in Dorchester and helf the office of Selectman for several years and was a Deacon of the church twenty-six years. In the Church Records is found the following account of his death: "The 8th day of the 11th mo. 1664, being the Sabbathday, Deacon Edward Clap departed this life and now resteth with the Lord, thereto spend an eternal Sabbath with God andChrist in Heaven, after that he had faithfully served in the office of a Deacon for the space of about five or sixand twenty years, and being the first Church officer that was taken away by death since the first joining together in covenant, which is now 28 years, 4 mo. and odd days." Deacon Edward owned one-half of the mill called "Clapp's Mill,"and Deacon Nicholas Clapp owned a quarter of the same. Dea. [9004] Henry of Essex, Lord of Rayleigh and Haughley (son of Robert Fitz Sueinof Essex and Gunnor Bigod) and his wife Cicely. [Ancestral Roots]
[17368]
John was not named in his fathers will but was named in brother Thomas' will of 13 Nar, 1559. Thomas called him "brother John". John was likely to have been married by the time his father's will was made, and had received his portion of his father's estate earlier. This evidence suggests that John was the oldest child. Warren and Scarlett Ancestry in England The Warren-Scarlett ancestry in England is primarily based on the material presented in The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908: Part IThe Ancestry of Warren Francis Kempton 1817-1879, by Dean Crawford Smith and edited by Melinde Lutz Sanborn (Boston, 1996), pages 462-474.
The first wife of John is unknown; he married her by about 1550. She evidently died before 5 Sep 1563, when John married his second wife,Agnes/Ann Howlett.
John writes of "John my elder son", John my myddle son" and Richard. John's bequests implied that his sons had no children at the time his will was made.
REF: [1] The Warner-Harrington Ancestry - Frederick C. Warren, 1949(pg.720) [2] The New England Historic Genealogical Register, 1910(pgs.348-355) [3] Fifty Great Migration Colonists to New England & Their Origins - John B. Threlfall, 1990 (pgs.485-488) .
His estate in Nayland parish, Suffolk was called Corlie or Curlie.John's first wife's name is unknown; she was mother of John the Elder,John the Middle, Richard, and Stephen. He was married second on Dec. 10,1559 at Nayland to the widow Christian HINSON, by whom he had no children. John married third Sep. 5,1563, Nayland, Agnes HOWLET (bur.Nov. 25, 1567, Nayland), mother of Anne/Agnes. John was married fourth Jan. 30, 1568/9 at Great Horkesley, Margaret FIRMETT (bur. Apr. 19, 1576, Nayland), widow of Mr. COLE, who was mother of Margaret. John's will was made Apr. 21, 1576 and proved Jun. 5, 1576, naming brothers James and William as executors, children the two Johns, Richard, and Anne. The will also names John's step-children Agnes COLE and John COLE, children of his last wife.
