Dear Newsgroup ~
Since making my post onEleanor (de Bohun) de Verdun yesterday, I'vechecked my files and found further confirmation which I believeconclusively proves that Eleanor was the daughter of Humphrey de Bohun(died 1275), Earl of Hereford and Essex. The evidence consists of twoseparate cases of consanguinity among descendants of Eleanor (de Bohun)de Verdun where they intermarried with their Bohun related kinfolk.
In the first instance, my notes record that there was a papaldispensation recorded in 1334, for the marriage of Maud de Grey and Johnde Lisle, 2nd Lord Lisle, of Rougement. As I recall, this dispensation ismentioned by Complete Peeragesub Lisle. Maud and John were stated to berelated in the 4th degree in their petition for a dispensation (i.e.,third cousins to each other). Maud de Grey was great-granddaughter ofEleanor (de Bohun) de Verdun. John de Lisle was great-grandson of Alice(de Bohun) de Tony.If the degree of kinship was correctly stated in thepapal registers, it wouldappear that Maud's ancestress, Eleanor de Bohun, and John's ancestress, Alice de Bohun, were sisters. Since Alice is knownto have been a daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex(died 1275), this in turn tells us that Eleanor was daughter of the sameHumphrey de Bohun.
In the second instance, my notes record there was a papal inquiry in 1334regarding the marriage of Margaret Basset and John de Bohun, Earl ofHereford and Essex. Margaret Basset wasa great-granddaughter of Eleanor(de Bohun)de Verdun. Margaret and her husband, John, were closelyrelated, but my notes don't tell how closely related the two partieswere, if the degree of kinship was stated. To resolve the question ofkinship, the Pope summoned a host of relatives of the young couple. Amongthose summoned were several of Margaret Basset's Grey relatives as wellas Alice de Tony, widow of Walter de Beauchamp, and her daughter andson-in-law, Margaret and Robert de Lisle. The people required to givetestimony presumably all hada tie to the Bohun family. If nothing else, this document provides added evidence that the Greys, Tonys, Beauchampsand Lisles all share a common descent from the Bohun family.

[16094] Plantagenet Ancestry of Seventeenth Century Colonist by David Farrar, 1st Edition, 1996, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore:pg 187: ... was m. for the 3rd time to Charles Noel (or Nowell). On 27 Oct. 1452, while hearing massin the chapel at Thorpe, she was seized by Edward Lancaster, Gent., of Skipton in Craven, and his men, placed on horseback and taken to an unknown churchwhere a priest performed a marriage ceremony enforced by Lancaster against her protests. Her son, Henry Beaumont, and her husband, Charles Nowell, petitioned Parliament for redress. She was living (apparently at the manor of Thorpe, after her son came of age) in 1460. FTM CD194, MA & ME Families, Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis, Beaumont, Ancestry of Nicholas Davis, by W. G. Davis, reprinted 1996, GPC, Baltimore, pg 144, 145: Joan Heronville, wife of Sir Henry Beaumont, was the dau. and eventually sole heir of Henry Heronville, lord of the manor of Wednesbury, co. Stafford. She was b. abt. 1402, being aged 4 when her father died in 1406. Before 1418, when her two younger sistersbecame nuns, she had m. William Leventhorpe, who had a dau. Elizabeth by a previous marriage. Joan's marriage to Sir Henry Beaumont is known, but the twoevents probably took place abt .1439 as there is a record of Leventhorpe as living in 1438. On Nov. 3, 1445, Beaumont and Joan, his wife, conveyed to trustees the manors of Wednesbury and Tymmore and 120 acres of land, 20 acres of meadow, 40 acres of wood and 10 pounds in rents in Wednesbury, Walstode, Fynchespath and Tybynton, and, after Beaumont's death, Joan made a similar conveyance of a fifth part of the manor of Egynton, co. Derby. Lady Beaumont m. thirdly, Charles Nowell, and they apparently lived on the manor of Thorpe, co. York, after her son Henry Beaumont came of age. At an unknown date, but after 1446, Jhn Hodelstone "cousin and heir to one William Leventhrop, Esq., that is to say son and heir to Elizabeth dau. and heir to the said William" sued Joan for 130 acres of land in Wednesbury, claiming that the settlement thereof provided that this land should be Joan's for life but that, if she married again after Leventhrop's death, it should go to William's heirs. "And the same William Leventhrop died after whose decease the said Jane to husband Henry Beamond and after the said Henry died, after whose decease the same Janetook to husband Charles Nowell."
