Henry Ferrers, b. 16 Feb 1355/6; d. 3 Feb 1387/8, 4th Baron Ferrers ofGroby; m. bef. 27 Apr 1371, Joan, d. 30 May 1394, probably daughter of Sir Thomas de Hoo and Isabel Seint Leger. [Ancestral Roots]
----------------------
BARONY OF FERRERS OF GROBY (IV) 1371
HENRY (DE FERRERS), LORD FERRERS OF GROBY, son and heir, by 1st wife, born 16 February 1355/6 in the Abbey of Tiltey, and baptized at Stebbing. During his minority, Edmund de Stebbyng clk. and Robert de Bradenham, two feoffees, conspired, by means of a forged release, to deprive him of the reversion of the manors of Marks in Great Dunmow and Flecknoe. On 26 Apr.1377 the King took his homage and fealty, and he had livery of his father's lands and of those which Margaret his stepmother had held for life in dower or otherwise of his inheritance. He took part in the expedition in 1377 under the Earl of Buckingham, in that of 1378 under the Duke of Lancaster, and in the raid of the Earl of Buckingham into Brittany, July 1380 to April 1381. In Aug. 1385 he accompanied Richard II in his invasion of Scotland, being in the main body with the King. He was summoned to Parliament from 4 August 1377 to 17 December 1387, by writs directed Henrico de Ferrariis (or de Ferrers) de Groby.
He married, before 27 April 1371, Joan, daughter (probably) of Sir Thomasde Hoo, of Luton Hoo and Stopsley, Beds, by Isabel, daughter and heir ofSir John DE SEINT LEGER, of Offley, Herts (a). He died 3 February 1387.His widow's dower was ordered to be assigned, 20 March 1387/8, and on 18 February 1388/9 she had livery of the knights' fees and advowsons of her dower, which were assigned to her by the King. She died 30 May 1394.[Complete Peerage V:351-3, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(a) Dugdale, citing Glover (who seems, however, to have merely followed the Visitation pedigree), calls Joan "da. of Thomas Poynings": this being impossible, later writers altered the statement to "da. of Luke Poynings." But Luke, in his will (1376)--which was unknown to these writers--does not mention her, though he leaves legacies to some two dozen persons. In 1371 the King gave to Luke de Ponynges the wardship of the lands of William de Ferrers (not the marriage of the heir, who was probably already married), but there is no reason to thence assume--as appears to have been done--that Joan belonged to the family of Poynings. However, her seal on a grant of hers, has a shield of Ferrers impaling on a chief two mullets pierced, presumably for St. John, as used by Poynings. On the other hand, the fact that her eldest son was born at the principal manor of Sir Thomas de Hoo affords a strong presumption that she was a daughter of Sir Thomas: Sir William de Hoo, son and heir of Thomas, was a feoffee of Henry de Ferrers in 1377.
[Note: the portion of the above note (a) which reads "Poynings. However, her seal on a grant of hers, has a shield of Ferrers impaling on a chief two mullets pierced, presumably for St. John, as used by Poynings." was added by CP XIV: 321, published in 1998, and is the basis for Plantagenet Ancestry declaring that Joan was a daughter of Luke de Poynings.]

Ancestor of U.S. Presidents
John during a particularly bad storm went top side and was swept overboard but "it pleased God that he caught hold of the top sailhal yards which hung overboard and ran out at length . Yet he held hishold (though he was sundry fathoms under water) till he was hauled up by the same rope to the brim of the water, and then with a boat hook and other means got into the ship again and his life saved. And though he was something ill with it yet he lived many years after." most fortunate for his descendants!!!
* The traditional date that has been ascribed to John Howland's birth is"about 1592", and this has never really been questioned. However, a birth about 1599 is clearly a better estimate for the following reasons:
John Howland is called a "manservant" in William Bradford's passenger list. Servants were contracted out until the age of 25. Thus, Howland must have been under 25 in 1620, meaning he had to have been born after1595. Since Howland signed the Mayflower Compact, he must have been born sometime before 1600 to have been legally old enough to sign.
John Howland's wife was born in 1607, and it is most unlikely that he, at the age of 32, married a 17 year old girl as his first wife. Most men married about age 25, and since his marriage occurred about 1624, this would place his likely birth at 1599.
John Howland's last child was born in 1649. If the 1592 date were accepted, he would have fathered a child at the age of 57, a most unlikely circumstance.
William Bradford writes in that John Howland was a "lusty young man" in 1620. It is unlikely that Bradford would call a 28-year old a "young man". The only other person Bradford called a "young man" in 1620 was John Alden, who was born in 1599.

Gersende's separation from her 1st husband supposedly didn't happen until 1048, but by my dates it would have been earlier than 1045.
