"Edward Messenger and his brothers came to New England with their parents. Edward was said to be one of the very earliest [European] settlers of the Colony of Connecticut. In 1650, he was living with his wife Dorcas and three children in what was known as the Windsor Settlement, where a fort had been built near Hartford. That same year, he was granted land at Greenfield (now
Bloomfield), Connecticut and the family made its permanent home there. The records of Windsor show that the court sentenced Edward to be whipped for cruel and merciless treatment of a servant and the lying to 'extenuate his fault.' In 1666, he gave his daughter Dorcas twenty acres of his Greenfield land on which to build a house on the occasion of her marriage to Peter Mills."
Children of EDWARD MESSENGER and DORCAS are:
i. DORCAS MESSENGER was born 23 Sep 1650 in Windsor CT, and died 18 May 1688 in Windsor, CT. She married PETER MILLS Spring 1666 in Bloomfield, Hartford Co, CT, son of WOUTER VANDER MUEULAN. He was born ? 1622 in Holland, and died 17 April 1710 in Windsor CT.
ii. NATHANIEL MESSENGER was born 1651 in Bloomfield, Hartford Co, CT, and died 1707 in Windsor CT. He married REBECCA KELSEY 5 April 1678 in Windsor CT, daughter of MARK KELSEY and REBECCA HOSKINS. She was born 1660 in Windsor CT, and died in Windsor CT.
iii. DELIVERANCE MESSENGER was born 1655, and died 1676.
It has been assumed he came to America with his Father, but so far there is no conclusive evidence to affirm this. He was however known to have been here before 1650. There are some who now say the relationship between Edward and Andrew above is not proven. I found some information in Mormon files which I wonder about, it is as follows:
If Edward Messenger isn't the son of Andrew Messenger born 1588 is it possible he is the Edward Messenger christened February 2, 1617 in St. Leonards Church, Upton, Gloucester, England, son of a John Messenger? Doesn't give wife's name. This is same birth year our Edward was said to have.
In 1650, EDWARD MESSENGER was married and living in Windsor, Connecticut. His wife's name is listed in Mormon records as SARAH but no last name. Some say perhaps her name was Dorcas.
In 1650 he also owned land in what is now Bloomfield, Connecticut. In the 1660's he gave his daughter, Dorcas 20 acres of land to build on.
He was also a grantee of land in New London, Connecticut in 1651.
On the first Thursday in March 1655\6 in Hartford, Connecticut, Edward Messenger was the plaintiff vs. John Comstock, defendant in action of debt of £10.
In the list of those having family and a horse in 1669, his name appears.
He was once sentenced by the Court to be whipped for merciless treatment of a servant and then lying to extenuate his fault.
