Also Known As:<_AKA> Gilbert de /Ghent/
Gilbert de Gant, son of Baldwin, Earl of Flanders, by Maud, sister of William the Conqueror, accompanied his uncle into England and, participating in the triumph of Hastings, obtained a grant of the lands of a Danish proprietor named Tour, with numerous other lordships.
This Gilbert happened to be at York, anno 1069, and had a narrow escape when the Danes in great force, on behalf of Edgar Etheling, entered the mouth of the Humberand, marching upon that city, committed lamentable destruction by fire and sword, there being more than 3,000 Normans slain. Like most of the great lords of his time, Gilbert de Gant disgorged to the church a part of the spoil which he had seized, and amongst other acts of piety restored Bardney Abbey, co. Lincoln, which had been utterly destroyed many years before by the Pagan Danes, Inquar and Hubba. He m, Alice, dau. of Hugh de Montfort, and had issue, Hugh, who assumed the name Montfort; Walter, his successor; Robert, Lord Chancellor of England, anno 1153; and Emma, m. to Alan, Lord Percy. This great feudal chief d.in the reign of William Rufus. [Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant, Abeyant,Forfeited, and Extinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage, Ltd., London, 1883, p.227, Gant, Earls of Lincoln]
NOTE: Both Burke and Brian Tompsett agree that Baldwin, [6th] Count of Flanders, was Gilbert's father. However, I cannot find any reference to William the Conqueror having a sister named Maud - the only documented sister I find is Adelaide. Brian Tompsett shows Baldwin VI "the Peaceable," Count of Flanders and Artois, and Richilda, Countess ofHainault and Namur, as the parents of Gilbert, and that's what I'm sticking with.

John de Vere, 7th Earl of Oxford; successfully claimed hereditary post ofMaster Chamberlain of England; campaigned against Scots and French, notably at victories of Crecy 1340 and Poitiers 1356; married by 27 March1336 Maud, widow of Rolful handling of the archers contributed to thevictory. In the following summer the Earl was at Bordeaux. He wassummoned on 10 October 1359 to attend a Council at Westminster on 11November, and later joined the King at the front.
He married, before 27 March 1336, Maud, widow of Robert FITZPAYN (died1322), son and heir apparent of Robert, 2nd LORD FITZPAYN, being sisterand (later) coheir of Giles (DE BADLESMERE), 2nd LORD BADLESMERE, and 2nddaughter of Bartholomew (DE BADLESMERE), 1st LORD BADLESMERE, byMargaret, elder daughter of Thomas DE CLARE, Lord of Inchiquin andYoughal. The Earl died at the siege of Rheims, 23 or 24 January 1359/60,and was buried at Colne Priory. His widow, who was born circa 1308-10,had assignment of dower, &c., in February. She died probably 24 May 1366,at Earls Colne, and was buried there. [Complete Peerage X:222-4,(transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(a) John's mother is said to have been Joan, daughter of Sir RichardFoliot, but no proof has been found of this. Alfonso doubtless owed hisname to Edward I's marriage with a sister of Alfonso, King of Castile andLeon. He served with the Earl, his brother, in the Scottish campaign of1298, and in 1303 was in the retinue of the Earl's son on service inScotland. He inherited Great Hormead, Herts, from his mother. In 1322 hewas summoned (from Tendring, Essex) against the Scots, and (from Bucks)was returned as a knight fit for service and accustomed to arms, thoughabove 60. He was summoned, May 1324, by proclamation, to attend the GreatCouncil at Westminster. He d. shortly before 20 Dec 1328, and was buriedin St. Albans Abbey

Occupation: Carpenter
Stephen had marriage banns to an unknown person published October 17,1625 Langley Parish, Hollingbourne, Kent, England. Stephen immigrated to circa 1635. Stephen's will was probated August 31, 1659 in Saybrook, CT. He may have come to America with the Reverend Thomas Hooker aboard the ship "Griffin" in 1634 or 1635, and settled at New Town, now Cambridge, Mass., on the south side of the Charles River near Boston. He had twelve acres of land there. According to C.W. Post genealogy (see Post Family Bible), he came four months after Hooker due to the birth of a child.
Hooker was a strong believer in democracy. When John Winthrop, in a letter to Hooker defending severe restrictions on suffrage, said that"the best part is always the least, and of that best part the wiser partis always the lesser", Hooker replied with the often-quoted remark: "in matters which concern the common good, a general council, chosen by all, to transact businesses which concern all, I conceive the most suitable to rule and most safe fore relief of the whole." Some authorites say that Hooker, more than any other, deserves to be called the father of American democracy. His quest for democracy led Hooker and his congregation to seek a new site on which to build a new city. He is buried in lot 441 in the old cemetary at Main and Gold Streets in Hartford.
In 1635, Steven Post and over 100 other followers accompanied Rev. Hooker to the valley of the Connecticut River, where they founded the city of Hartford, Connecticut. The founder's monument stands in the same old cemetary where Hooker was buried in 1647, and bears about 80 names. Among these are Stephen Post, William Hyde, Matthew Marvin, and Thomas Bliss Jr. and Sr.
The current monument was erected in 1986, replacing the originals and stone one of 1837.
In 1649, Stephen moved to Saybrook (now Westbrook), Connecticut, where he made his home until his death in 1659. A notice of a Saybrook town meeting, January 7, 1655-6, exists which mentions the presence of the following: Thomas Adgate William Hide Robert Bull Randall Marvin Thomas Burchet William Parker William Bushnell John Post Robert Chapman Stephen Post John Clark, Sen. Jonathan Rudd Thomas Dunke Richard Tousland Richard Edgerton Thomas Tracy Francis Griswold William Waller
The inventory of his estate, taken by John Clarke, Thomas Leffingwell, and Christopher Huntington, was valued at 442 pounds.
