[15472] ORIGIN OF MESSENGER NAME

According to Burke and other authorities, MASSINGER, MESSENGER, MASSENGER and MESSINGER, all may be the same. This was noted first on the Gloucestershire Arms: Ar., a Chevron between three close helmets Sable and in Rudder's History of Gloucestershire, page 597, is this notice: In the Church at Painswick, six miles south of Gloucester, against the north wall are several memorials of the MASSINGER family, formerly of Gloucester, whose Arms are: Argent a Chevron gules between three helmets sable.

In Herald's College, London, the same Arms are entered as borne by JOHN MESSENGER of Newisham, County of York who died in 1616, aged 70 years. He was buried at Kirk Ravensworth.

Two of his son's, HENRY and ANTHONY were killed in the service of Charles I. Another, JOHN MESSENGER ESQ. who was born in 1590 was the owner of Fountain Abbey Estate near Ripon. In 1627, his Crest was a dove with an olive branch, and the Motto: Nuncia Pacis.

Other Arms were borne by Messengers of Norfolk at the visitation of that County in 1664 (refers to a Royal visit), viz.: Vert. on a bend engrailed argent, a plain bend of the field, a bordure engrailed argent with Motto: Legatus fidelis ei qui misit eum - Proverbs xxv: 13. (As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.) (K.J.V.)

In this History, it appears that HENRY MESSENGER married JOAN COKE in 1559 and that his son, AUGUSTINE MESSENGER, gentleman was Lord of Whitwell or Gambon Manor.

On a gravestone in the chancel of the Church there is an inscription partly in Latin and the name is spelled MESSINGER. If either of these Coats of Arms belonged to the first settler of that name in Boston, it was probably the first described. We know he was entitled to bear Arms as his widow in her Will, dated 1694, particularly mentions that Simeon Messenger, (the eldest son then living) was to have the Messenger Coat of Arms. As Simeon died without male issue, no further mention is found of them.

Note: This must mean Henry Messenger instead of Andrew as the Coat of Arms is mentioned in his wife's Will. It is odd, if Henry was the youngest son as material states.

Of the origin of the name, Lower on Surnames, says of Massinger that it is evidently a corruption of the French, MESSAGER (a messenger, a bearer of dispatches) while others have supposed the name comes from the Parish of Messing, in Essex County, England. This name is Saxon, and in old records is written MESSINGES, MESSANGES, MESCINGE and MASSINGE.

In Wright's Essex, page 394 Vol. I, we find this note: King Henry II grants to Hugh, son of ANKETILL DE MESCINGE all the land which he held in the Barony of Reynes, in the village of Messanges, Birch, etc., and that he and his heirs should afterward purchase, with ample privileges and liberty of hunting in all the forest of England. See Charta de Foresta de Essex.

In the Rolls of Pleading, the time of Edward I and II, page 207, illusion is made to the men of Messinge and on page 336, is the name RIC`US MESSINGE of London, time of Edward II, but the earlier names are those of MESSAGER.

In the Rolls of the King's Court, in the reign of Richard I, page 118, is the name
JOHANNES MESSAGER about the year 1194. In the Fine Rolls of Henry III, about 1260, we find HENRICUS MESSAGER, son of RADAULPHUS LE MESSAGER of Essex.

In the History of Surrey, Vol. III, page 110, it appears a part of the Manor of Send is vested in 1639 in JOHN MESSENGER or MESSAGER, Vicar of Send.
In the History of Norfolk, there are several clergy from 1435 of the name of MESSENGER and we find a THOMAS MESSINGER, a rector of Shimpling, Norfolk in 1451.

In Wood's Oxoniensis F, page 12, REVEREND ROLAND MESSYNGER was proctor May 11, 1508 and in the service of Cardinal Wolsey. He was also one of the original fellows of Brazen Nose College, Oxford in 1511 and his name there was spelled MESSENGER.

The American branch of the Messenger family seems to correspond closely to the English Yorkshire family. The e and the i spelling of the name seems to have been a matter of personal choice as in many instances the father spelled it with an e and the son with an i or vice versa. This same pattern still being common among various Messenger families.

This was taken for the most part from Genealogy of the Messenger Family by the Hon. George W. Messenger of Boston, Massachusetts. I found all of it in the book MESSENGERS IN THE COLONY OF CONNECTICUT.

There is also another version of the Origin of Messenger. In the Genealogy and Dictionary Vol. 3, page 201 by Savage is the following:

MESSENGERS are the lineal descendants of the Duke of Alva of Spain who was very proud of his lineage, tracing it back to the time of the Byzantine Empire 300 years after Christ.

The legend concerning the origin of the name is as follows:

The KING OF SPAIN, having an important message to transmit a great distance, called for someone to whom he might safely entrust it. The journey was long and hazardous and none of the close followers of the King responded. Finally a young soldier from the ranks volunteered to carry it. After an absence of some days, he returned with standards flying and shouting as he came: It is done. For his bravery he was Knighted and given the name MESSENGER. He married into the Duke of Alva's family, a daughter presumably and they had three sons. One of whom went to Germany and his name became MESSINGER as now spelled. One son went to England and his name became MESSENGER.

The MESSENGERS who settled in England became very wealthy, but because of some political or religious heresy, their property was confiscated and they emigrated to America.

Later a proposition came to them looking for restoration of their property if they would return to England and pledge their allegiance to their King.

Note: This latter part on the Duke of Alva seems to me to be too late a time period for our branch as the Duke of Alva was born and lived from 1508-1583 and our first Andrew was born in 1588 in England.

This is a bit I found on the Duke of Alva which might be of interest:

Duke of Alva or Alba, FERNANDO ALVAREZ DE TOLEDO was a Spanish General known for his cruelty and tyranny. In 1567, King Philip made him governor of the Netherlands, which had revolted against Spanish rule. Alva's Court sentenced thousands of persons to death and was called the Council of Blood. His brutality and harsh taxes only made the Netherlands more determined to be free. Patriots seized the major coast towns and attacked Spanish shipping. They cut his dikes, and floodwaters stopped Alva's army. His expedition of 1580 made Portugal temporarily part of Spain.

Personally I would rather not be related to this man.

The origin of the name MESSENGER is listed in the New England Register Vol. 16, page 308 as follows:

When telephones and postal services were non-existent, Kings, Nobles and others required messengers to carry letters. In England they were called MESSENGER or TROTTER. Both names also being used in Scotland.

As one of my new found Cousins remarked she was glad we were MESSENGER'S instead of TROTTER'S.

Anyway I thought it was a good legend as legends go. Their Coat of Arms was similar to one I have except the position of Pegasus was a bit different and they had a Motto: IRA LICET which means It is done.

Have some information found on Internet in March 2002. Some of it touches on some of people mentioned here and says they are line down to Edward, our ancestor. Am not sure about that but will put it in here in case it is true.

JOHN MESSENGER was born 1546 in England, and died 1616 in England. He was the son of WILLIAM MESSENGER.

Children of AGNES and JOHN MESSENGER are:
i. MICHAEL JAMES MESSENGER was born 1564.
ii. ANDREW MESSENGER was born about 1588 in Yorkshire, England, and died in New England. He married SARAH in England. She was born 1590, and died in England.
iii. JOHN MESSENGER was born 1590, and died 1670. He married ELIZABETH
iv. ANTHONY MESSENGER was born Unknown
v. HENRY MESSENGER was born Unknown. He married JOAN COKE in 1599 according to earlier information in other part of material.
