BARONY OF SAINT JOHN (II)
HUGH (DE ST. JOHN), LORD ST. JOHN, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir(h), was going to Gascony in June 1329, and in March 1331/2 was one ofthe Keepers of Hants; King's yeoman in January 1332/3 (i). In 1335 he wassummoned against the Scots, but never to Parliament. He married Mirabel----; and died shortly before 25 October 1335. His widow had licence tomarry again, 8 May 1336, and had married, 2ndly, before 10 March 1336/7,when they had assignment of her dower, Thomas DE ASPALE, of Kent. Theywere both living June 1355. (h) According to Boxgrove, he had an elder brother William, b. 13 June1309, who dsp. His father's Inq.p.m. states Hugh's age as 19 on 26 May1329, but he was still under age on 16 Oct 1331, though presumably 21 by22 Jan 1331/2.

Arrived April 1635 on the Susan and Ellen.
Thomas Brigham, the ancestor of the Brighams in New England, embarked at London for America, April 18, 1635, in the ship Susan and Ellyn, Edward Payne, master.
He was then 32 years of age, and consequently was b. in 1603. he settled in Watertown, near Cambridge line, on land which was afterwardset to Cambridge. He was made freeman in 1639, and was selectman in 1640, and subsequently. He m. about 1637, Mercy Hurd, b. in England. He d. Dec. 18, 1653, and she m. 1655, Edmund Rice, then of Sud., but afterwards of Marl. He d. and she m. as her 3rd husband, William Hunt, of Marl.,who d. 1667. and she d. 1693.
Mercy brought a cap box from England, which is on display at the historical museum in Worcester, MA.
The Brighams were not among the very first settlers of Marl., though they came to the place quite early, and became a numerous family, extending over almost the whole of the original township.

His eldest son, Anthony Woodville, 2d Earl Rivers, 1442?-1483,accompanied Edward into exile (1470-71) and later served him invarious capacities. In 1473 he was appointed guardian of Edward,prince of Wales (later Edward V). On Edward IV's death, however,Rivers was arrested by Richard, duke of Gloucester (laterRichard III), and executed. A somewhat romantic and otherworldlyfigure, Rivers wrote translations of various French works. EARLDOM OF RIVERS (II)
ANTHONY (WYDEVILL), EARL RIVERS, and BARON RIVERS, son and heir,born about 1440, was a Knight in January 1459/60, when capturedwith his father at Sandwich. He fought on the Lancastrian sideat Towton, 29 March 1461. Having married Elizabeth, daughter andheir of Thomas, Lord Scales, he was summoned to Parliament, 22December 1462, as LORD SCALES. In that month he accompanied theKing to Scotland and took part in the siege of Alnwick. J.P. inNorfolk in 1464. On 25 May 1465, cup-bearer at his sister'scoronation. K.G. 1466(?). In November 1466, upon surrender by aprevious grantee, he had a grant of the Isle of Wight, withCarisbrooke Castle. In June 1467 he fought the Bastard ofBurgundy, whom he had challenged, in lists at Smithfield. He wasa commissioner in September following to arrange the marriage ofthe King's sister Margaret with Charles, son of Philip, Duke ofBurgundy, and in November made keeper of Porchester Castle. InOctober 1468, captain of the King's armed power (armata) againstFrance, which effected nothing. When the rebellion broke out inJune, 1469, he was with the King in Norfolk. In June 1470,commissioner of array in Hants, and captain of the King's armedpower, with which he baulked the designs of the Earl of Warwick.He was also appointed Lieutenant of Calais. When Edward, in histurn, was obliged to flee from England, in September 1470,Rivers attended him. He returned with him in March 1471, andfought with great valour, 14 April, at Barnet, where he waswounded. Left in charge of London, while Edward was fighting atTewkesbury, he defeated the Bastard Fauconbridge's attempt toseize the city. In July he was among the Lords of Parliament (noParliament was then sitting) who took the oath to maintain theright of the Prince of Wales, and was appointed on the Prince'scouncil. In 1472, he sailed with a body of men to obtain thesurrender of the Earls of Pembroke and Richmond from Brittany,and was chief commissioner to treat with the Duke. On 17 May1473, Chief Butler of England for life; 10 November, Governor ofthe Prince of Wales. In August 1475 he took part in the King'sexpedition to France, and in 1476 was with the Duke of Burgundyat the siege of Morat; an arbitrator between England and France,January 1478/9. When Edward IV died, 9 April 1483, he was withthe Prince at Ludlow; on their way to London the Duke ofGloucester procured his arrest, on a charge of attempting tousurp the government; he was imprisoned in Sheriff Hutton andPontefract Castles, Yorks, and beheaded at Pontefract, 25 June,without any regular trial.
He married, 1stly, before 22 December 1462, Elizabeth, widow ofSir Henry BOURCHIER, 2nd son of Henry (BOURCHIER), EARL OFESSEX, and daughter and heir of Thomas, LORD SCALES (died July1460). She died s.p., 2 September 1473. In 1477 Edward proposedLord Rivers as a husband for the young Duchess of Burgundy; in1479 considerable progress had been made with a proposal for amarriage with Margaret, sister of James III of Scotland. Hemarried, 2ndly, before October 1480, Mary, daughter and heir ofSir Henry FITZLEWIS (died May 1480) of Horndon, Essex, byElizabeth, daughter of Edmund (BEAUFORT), DUKE OF SOMERSET (g).He died s.p., as above, 25 June 1483.
