[21245] Poet Robert Frost is a descendant

Thomas, died in May 1592. Henry Chandler was born about 1560 and buried at Bishops-Stortford on December 17, 1618. He married, about 1590, Anne(? ), who survived him. He was a glover. His children, all recorded at Bishops-Stortford are: Richard, born in 1591 and died young; William, born in 1592, Sarah, born in 1597/98; Elizabeth, born probably about 1601; Samuel, born in 1605 and buried in May 1606; and Samuel, born in 1607 and married in June 1629 to Margaret Gray.

Occupation: pointer of laces

Emigration: 1637

William and his second wife Annis and four children removed to New England in 1637. His trade was point makeing, the making of lace tags for fastening clothing which were in voge before buttons. He was an early proprietor and householder of Roxbury, a freeman 1640. He had 22 acres at the southerly corner of the present Bartlett and Washington St. in Roxbury.

The English ancestry of William Chandler is taken from English Origins of New England Families, Vol. II and the Ancestry of William Chandler of Roxbury, Massachusetts, contributed by G. Andrews Moriaarity, A.M.L.L.B.,F.S.A., of Bristol, Rhode Island.

The birth dates of William and Agnes Bayford are their baptismal dates. All birth dates for their children are also baptismal dates.

William and his family emigrated to New England about 1637 and arrived in 1638 in Roxbury, Massachusetts as one of the early proprietors of Roxbury. He took the freeman's oath in May 13, 1640. He owned about 22 acres which was situated at the southerly corner of the present Bartlett and Washington Streets in Roxbury. It later became the property of John Dane who married William's widow, Agnes.

His occupation was that of a pointer of laces.

Cause of his death was consumption

***********************************************************************************

His emigration was due to the preaching of Rev. John Eliot, the Puritan minister known as the "Apostle to the Indians" who was born in the neighboring parish of Widford and went to New England in 1631. He became the pastor of the church at Roxbury, Mass, being accompanied or followed there by many adherents who had lived in the parishes on the borders of Herts and Essex. William appears among the early proprietors and householders of Roxbury and was admitted as a freeman of Massachusetts on May 13,1640. He owned an estate of twenty-two acres. This homestead was situated at the southerly corner of the present Bartlett and Washington streets in Roxbury and it later became the property of John Dane, who married the widow of William Chandler. The Roxbury church records indicate that William died of Consumption.

-------------
He died at Roxbury, Mass 26 Jan 1641/2, the Roxbury Church records containing the following record "1641. Month 11th day 26. William Chandler, A Christian & godly broth'r dyed of a Consumption" (Roxbury Land and Church Records, printed, pg. 170)
William Chandler learned the trade of point making, the making of the lace tags for fastening clothing, which were in vogue before buttons came into use. By his father's will, in 1618, he received only D4, and it is,therefore, probable that he had already received from his father a portion of his patrimony.
Except for the references to him in the parish registers and in his father's will, no records of him until he emigrated with his family to New England in 1637. His emigration was due, without doubt, to the preaching of Rev. John Eliot, the Puritan minister known as the "Apostle to the Indians" who was born in the neighboring parish of Widford in1604, went to New England in 1631, and became the pastor of the church at Roxbury, Mass being accompanied or followed thither by many adherents who had lived in the parishes on the borders of Herts. and Essex.
William Chandler appears among the early proprietors and householders of Roxbury, and was admitted a freeman of Mass. on 13 May 1640 (Records of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay, Printed, Vol. 1, pg. 377). He owned an estate of twenty-two acres described as follows:
"John Dane his house and lott with a swamp before the house, butting upon the way leading to the house of John Watson east, in all five acres and a halfe more or lesse, upon John Watson's swamp south, upon the heires of Thomas Ruggles west, and upon the heires of George Alcocke north. And in the nookes next Dorchester being the second lott lying betweene PhillipTory and the assignes of Joseph Patching ten accres and a halfe. And in the thousand accres near Deedam. All the lands with the house above mentioned were latly belonging to the heires of William Chandler" (Roxbury Land and Church Records, printed, pg. 5, 39)
This homestead of William Chandler was situated at the southerly corner of the present Bartlett and Washington Street in Roxbury [1931] (seeDrake's Town of Roxbury, pg. 368) and it later became the property of John Dane, who married the widow of William Chandler, by grant of the Mass General Court, as appears from the following documents:
"1649. At a Genrall Corte, at Boston, the 17th of the 8th Mo. Upon the petition of John Dayne, the house & land wch was Wm Chambs [sic] is settled upon ye said Dayne, he haveing paid more debts of Chambs (sic) then ye house & land was worth, & also brought up ye children of Chandler, wen have bene chargable to him."
"19 Oct 1649. In ansr to the peticon of John Dajne ffor the settling the howse and lands of Wm Chandler (whose wyddow he marryed, & children brought up) on him, the said John Dajne, his request was graunted, & ye said howse and lands confirmed on him by this Courte" (Records of theMass Bay, Printed, Vol. 2, p. 283; Vol. 3, pg. 177)
The following account of William Chandler, given in the list of members of the Roxbury Church by his pastor, Rev. John Eliot, well describes his curcumstances and character:
"William Chandler, he came to N. E. aboute the yeare 1637; he bought 4 small childr, Thomas, Hana, John, Willia'. his 5t child Sarah was borne here; he lived a very religious & Godly life among us & fell into a consumption, to wh he had bene long inclined; he lay neare a yeare sick, in all wh time his faithk, patien, & Godlynesse & contenation so shined, yt Christ was much gloryfied in him; he was was a man of weak pts, but excellent fath & holyness, he was very thankful man, & much magnified Gods goodnesse, he was pore, but God so opened the hearts of his nabs to him yt he nver wante yt wh was (as least in his esteem) very plentifull and comfortable to him; he dyed about the [blank] in yeare 1641, & left a sweet memory & savor behind him." (Roxbury Land and Church Records, printed, pg. 83).

[13309] William de Stanleigh, Stanley, in County Stafford, in the time of EdwardII, 1307-1326, married Jane or Joan, daughter of Sir Philip Bamville, ofStoreton, and his wife Agnes, daughter and heir of Alexander Stourton. Bythis marriage he became hereditary ranger of the Forest of Wirral, andacquired one-third of the manor of Stourton (later acquiring all of it),and migrated to their newly acquired home in Cheshire.

William (II) de Stanley; Lord of Manor and Bailiwick of Wyrall (modern Wirral) Forest; went to law with the Prior of Trentham, Staffs 1292/3 over land in Over Elkeston, Staffs; married 27 Sep 1282 Joan (living 1326), eldest daughter and coheir
of Philip de Baumville, hereditary Forester of Wirral, by Agnes, daughter and coheir of Alexander de Storeton (cognate? with Stourton, Staffs) by Anabilla, daughter and heir of Ranulph de Silvester, son of Allan Silvester, Lord of Storeton.
[Burke's Peerage]

Note: I count three different Storeton's/Stourton's in the above text. No wonder Burke's entitles the next few generations as "Lord of Storeton or Stourton etc.". It is hard to sort out the different Storeton/Stourton places. It is a case of
TOO MANY STORETON/STOURTONs

WILLIAM DE STANLEY, son and heir. In 1292-93 he sued the Prior of Trentham for land and wood in Over Elkeston, Staffs, of which he claimed that the Prior had unjustly disseised Master John de Stanley, his uncle, whose heir he was; in the same
year, with Joan his wife, he brought proceedings for breach of an agreement whereby he had conceded a wood to William de Bagenholt in return for a site for a mill. He married, 27 September 1282, Joan, eldest daughter and coheir of Philip DE
BAUMVILE, at the church of Astbury, co. Chester, at a banquet given by his uncle, Master John de Stanley, rector of Astbury. [Complete Peerage XII/1:247

[33778] The marriage of William to Joan has become one of Cheshire's legends. The story relates that Sir Phillip and his wife Lettice, were being entertained at a banquet given at Stourton in Cheshire. A marriage had been arranged for Joan (who was her
father's heir) with the son of his wife (who was Joan's stepmother). She had no liking for that marriage, and while the festivities were at their height, she slipped out of the Hall to where William De Stanley was waiting with saddled horses.
Together they galloped to Astbury where they were wed in the Church by William's uncle, John De Stanley, William saying: "Joan, I plight thee my troth to take and hold thee as my lawful wife until my life's end," and she replying, "I, Joan,
take thee William, as my lawful husband." In 1284, on the death of his wife's father, William De Stanley acquired the hereditary office of Master Forester of Wirral together with the Manor of Stourton and the bailiwick of Wirral. In 1306 and
1307, he is mentioned as Hereditary Forester of Wirral. In the year 1316, by grant of Edward II, he assumed the Armorial Bearings, viz. 'Arg, on a bend asure, three Stags Head, cabossed, Or', in place of those previously borne by his ancestors.
These arms are carried by his descendants to this day.
