Name variations: Cook, Cooke,
Francis Cooke was the 17th signer of the "Mayflower Compact", 1620. Francis Cooke of the Mayflower by Ralph V. Wood, Jr., Picton Press, 1996 pg 1 -26:
Francis Cooke's youth is entirely unknown to us;he was a young man of about 20 when he first appeared in the Leyden records in 1603, described as a wool comber from England. It is not unlikely that he was new to Leyden at the time he had learned his trade in England, although whether in the Norwich area or not is unknown. Allowing for his youth and a period of courtship, perhaps he arrived in Leyden in 1602 aged 19 or so. Francis Cooke and his son John embarked on the Speedwell at Delfshaven, Holland in July 1620, leaving behind Hester and the other children. At Southampton or Plymouth, England they were transferred to the Mayflower and in her set sail from Plymouth on Wednesday 6 September 1620 (16 September 1620 new style).
Francis Cooke was on several committees and held a number of offices as follows: Committee to lay out the twenty-acre grants 3 January 1627/8; committee to lay out land, 5 May 1640 and 5 October 1640; committee to lay out highways,1 October 1634, 2 May 1637, 1 February 1640/1 and 10 June 1650; Plymouth petit jury, 2 January 1637/8, 3 September 1639, 3 December 1639, 3 March 1639/40, 7 June 1642, 7 September 1642 and 7 March 1642/3; Plymouth grand jury 5 June 1638, 2 June 1640, 7 March 1642/3 and 4 June 1645; Coroner's jury 22 July 1648, on the body of a four-year old daughter of Richard and Allis Bishop; andarbitrator in land dispute between Thomas Pope and William Shurtleff, 2 August 1659.

Francis Cooke immigrated to America aboard the Mayflower with his son John. Hester and the other children arrived on the "Little James/Anne" crossing in 1623. It is recorded in the archives of Leydon, Netherlands that Francis entered Holland on June 30, 1603. He was a bachelor and listed his occupation as a woolcomber. He was accompanied by Phillippe de Veau, Ralph Roelandt, Hester Ma Hieu, her mother Jennie Mamam Mahieu and her sister Jennie Mahieu.
Francis was made a freeman in 1633. He appeared frequently on Plymouth records in Grand Juries, Survey of Highways, Adhoc Committees and Land Transactions.

Ancestor of U.S. President Gerald R. Ford.
William French was born in England, perhaps March 15, 1603, at Halstead, Essex, although this has not been proven. He may also have been son of William of Bures St. Mary, Suffolk County, England; see "Thomas French of Assington, Suffolk, England & Ipswich, MA" NEHGS"Register," Vol. 142, pg.150. According to custom house documents, he was born in Essex County in1605.
William migrated on the ship "Defense" which sailed from London July 10,1635. He is listed on the passenger list as servant to Roger Harlakenden, likely a ruse because of immigration restrictions of the time. He eventually settled at Cambridge where he was a tailor. He was a proprietor of Cambridge 1635-36. He was confirmed as a lieutenant May 26,1647. He removed to Billerica, MA in about 1652. At Billerica, he was an original proprietor and settler and first deputy or representative from Billerica to the general Court of Massachusetts at Boston, 1663-1666. He was the author of a famous tract called "Strength out of Weakness."
His will is dated June 5, 1679 and was proved December 20, 1681.
