Occupation: Weaver
"dyed old goodman Shaw of Weymouth pretty suddenly", Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, New England
Note: x9 was a lieutenant in the French and Indian War. It is said he mayhave had a share in the ruthless treatment of the Indians during theswamp fight.
From "History of Weymouth, Massachusetts", George Walter Chamberlain,(Boston, 1923), page 612.
JOHN2 SHAW (Abraham1) was baptized at Halifax, Eng., 23 May, 1630; diedat Weymouth, 16 Sept. 1704.
Administration on the estate of John Shaw, late of Weymouth, husbandman, was granted to his widow Alice and his eldest son John Shaw, 17 Oct.1704. (Suffolk Probate, 15: 350.) Division of his estate mentions his eldest son John, his second son Nicholas, his third son Joseph, his fourth son Benjamin, his youngest son Ebenezer and his daughters, Mary King, widow, her four sons and daughter ____ King, Joseph Poole and his wife Elizabeth, Gideon Tirrell and his wife Hannah, Richard Davenport and his wife Abigail, and John Androse and his wife Alice, 11 Mar. 1705-06. He married, near 1650, Alice Phillips, the mother of all his children, who survived her husband. She was daughter of Nicholas Phillips of Weymouth.
*******************************************************************************************
"John, son of Abraham and Bridget Best Shaw, is born in Halifax on 21st May 1630. When he is five years old he arrived with his parents in Watertown, MA, (Rumor has it that there is a passenger list of a ship arriving in Boston, New England and has a record of these Shaw's, I will get info on this later)--lived also in Dedham but settled in Weymouth where he married, in 1655, Alice, daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Jepson) Philips. Alice mentioned in the will of Nicholas Philips, dated 2nd June 1671 and proved 3rd October 1672. John is a Weaver, probably having had experience in the trade before he arrived to New England, small as he was. Yorkshire is sheep and cloth-producing country, and children at the age of four were used in the trade, their little fingers being better suited to tying knots and cutting threads close than those of larger hands. Yorkshire is said to have produced cloth for Charlemagne. And having eleven children, he seems to have had quite a constant supply of little fingers... John lived in the times when the Indians are carrying on raids and burning and scalping. These culminated in King Philip's War, during which John served as Lieutenant and no doubt had his share in the ruthless punishment meted out to the Indians at the close of the Swamp Fight...Probably most of the men who took part in this war had been born in England. They are the grandsons of the Reformation, during which times burning became pretty common in England [CI:130:?1:CI]."
He married, near 1650, Alice Phillips, the mother of all his children, who survived her husband. She is daughter of Nicholas Phillips of Weymouth. John Shawe & Alice Phillips settled in Weymouth, Massachusetts, New England "His estate is divided in 1705 [CI:194:?1:CI]." Administration of Probate 15, 350.
Children, born at Weymouth:
John, b. near 1653, alive 11th March 1705/06. m Hannah Whitmarsh
Elizabeth, b. 26th February 1655/56; m. Joseph Poole of Weymouth.
Abraham, b. 10th October 1657; d. before 11 Mar. 1705/06.
Mary, b. 24th March 1659/60; m. probably Hezekiah King.
Nicholas, b. 23rd March 1662.
Joseph, b. 15th April 1664.
Alice, b. 6th July 1666; m. John Androse.
Hannah, b. 7th April 1668; m. Gideon Tirrell.
Benjamin, b. 16th June 1670.
Abigail, b. 15th July 1672; m. Richard Davenport.
Ebenezer, b. 24th April 1674.
From "History of Weymouth, Massachusetts", George Walter Chamberlain, (Boston, 1923), page 612.
JOHN2 SHAW (Abraham1) is baptized at Halifax, England, 23rd May, 1630
John Shawe died 16th September 1704 in Weymouth, Mass & his estate is divided in 1705.
Administration on the estate of John Shaw, late of Weymouth, husbandman, is granted to his widow Alice and his eldest son John Shaw, 17th October 1704. (Suffolk Probate, 15: 350.) Division of his estate mentions his eldest son John, his second son Nicholas, his third son Joseph, his fourth son Benjamin, his youngest son Ebenezer and his daughters, Mary King, widow, her four sons and daughter ____ King, Joseph Poole and his wife Elizabeth, Gideon Tirrell and his wife Hannah, Richard Davenport and his wife Abigail, and John Androse and his wife Alice, 11th March 1705-06. (IBid. n. s., 6:181.)
DO NOT GET THESE SHAW"S OF WESSAGUSCUS OR WESSAGUSETT COLONY (NOW WEYMOUTH), (WAS SUFFOLK COUNTY) NOW NORFOLK COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS, NEW ENGLAND CONFUSED WITH THE OTHER SHAW"S OF PLYMOUTH COLONY!!!
Note: Appendixes of The Real Founders of New England Appendix A, page 162:
SHAW, John, Wessagusset, ?1623?; ??in division of cattle Plymouth??, 1627 THIS JOHN SHAW IS NOT THE ONE OF PLYMOUTH COLONY; "John Shaw Sr" of Weymouth 1672/3; 9 September, 1704, "dyed old goodman Shaw of Weymouth pretty suddenly." Goodwin, Pilgrim Republic, p. 297, says that Shaw and Phinehas Pratt of the division did not come in any Pilgrim ship. Closely associated in land sales (Mayflower Desc., vol. 4, 1902, p. 96). Of course Shaw may have come in a fishing ship, not with Pratt. [p.162)
Fact: This JOHN SHAW and ALICE PHILLIPS ARE NOT THE JOHN SHAW AND "ALICE" OF PLYMOUTH COLONY, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, New England see (See this John Shaw that died 16th September 1704, late of Weymouth 17th October 1704., Last Will and Testament for identification proving they ARE NOT the other Shaws of Plymouth Colony) (Suffolk Probate, 15: 350.) (IBid. n. s., 6:181.) During the 1600's It is purely and simply coincidental that there is another family of Shaw's less than 30 miles away who just so happened to be "John Shaw and Alice Shaw." John and Alice are very popular names in 1500's and 1600's and there is enormous amount of people with those first names in those time eras. Also when a quite a few genealogy researchers made attempts to look for wills, deeds, land and court records of this Shaw family, the researchers have failed to notice that Wessaguscus or Wessagusett Colony (now Weymouth), is at first in the jurisdiction of SUFFOLK COUNTY until it later became NORFOLK COUNTY.
More than likely though, It is very probable that these two separate couples "John and Alice Shaw" may have known of each others existence living here in New England. Although it has been proven without a doubt the John Shaw of Weymouth, his father is Abraham Shaw and Bridget Best and is much younger than the John Shaw of Plymouth Colony. Also more than likely these two different John Shaw's are cousins going back several generations over in England. There is even a possibility they are even more so closely related to one another. It is known that the Shaw families in England were farmers and miners who owned lots of land all over and flourished in the Yorkshire and London regions of England.
CAN IT BE FAIR TO SAY SOMEDAY AFTER RESEARCH, THE SHAW FAMILIES IN ENGLAND ARE THE SAME SHAW FAMILY THROUGH HUNDREDS OF YEARS? ALSO IT IS KNOWN THAT SHAWS FROM SCOTLAND AND IRELAND THROUGH DIFFERENT GENERATIONS MIGRATED TO ENGLAND, BACK AND FORTH, TO AND FRO IN VARIOUS DIFFERENT AREAS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.

FTM CD194, Mass. & Me. Families, Vol II, Mitton, of Weston-Under-Lizard, pg 618:
The Swinerton's descend from Stephen de Uslewell alias de Swinnerton who flourished in co. Stafford in the middle years of the thirteenth century and who, possibly by inheritance of marriage, acquired the manor of Swinnerton which had given its name to an earlier family of lords. Sir Roger de Swinnerton, who was lord of Swinnerton in 1286, knighted by 1290
and d. c. 1 298, was Stephen de Uslewall's son. His wife Joan may have been a dau of Sir Robert de Hastang of Chebsey.
