continued from Athanatius:
POTTENGER'S STATION
The following article was published July 12, 1923 and is by S. ForestPottinger, a lineal descendant of Capt Samuel Pottenger, the founder ofPottenger's Station.
"It is positively established that this Station was built in thespring of 1781. To accommodate the number of persons, who occupied it atfirst, with their livestock, which had to be taken within enclosure forsafekeeping, the fortification must have covered considerable ground.
The inmates at first , besides Capt. Pottenger and his nine brothersand sisters who accompanied him to Kentucky, were: Griffith Willett(Capt. Pottenger's uncle), and his family and the Graft step-children;three families named Gilkey; three Withrows; Zachariah Masterson andfamily; Jacob Miller and family (his wife having been a Masterson); theKincaid family; besides several unmarried connections of these personswho came along. This number was greatly added to by immigrations andbirths during the few succeding years. The Pottengers, Willetts andGrafts were from Maryland; the Gilkeys and Withows came up from NorthCarolina; the Mastersons, Millers and Kincaids were from Pennsylvania.
The first brick residence in the County, outside of Bardstown, waserected in 1788 by Capt. Pottenger, one half mile east of the Station. Itwas called Walnut Hill. His first child born in the Fort was "Betsy" whomarried James Phillips, and lived in the Cox's Creek neighborhood; thefirst one in the old brick house was John, who was born in 1789 and diedof the cholera epidemic in 1833. (My mother, Ruby Pottinger Reynolds wasborn at Walnut Hill in 1919).
Capt. Pottenger, who was born in Prince George's County, Maryland,Apr. 29, 1754, died Jan. 20, 1831, while on a visit to his daughter"Betsy." He is buried in the cemetery of the Cox's Creek Baptist Church.
Samuel Pottenger was the son of Richard Pottenger and ElizabethWillett."
Deposition of John Jackson: Rowan vs. Oldham - B Book - Land Causes
Q: Were there any Persons living at Cartwright's Station in Decemer1782?
A: Not as I now recollect of, because those that lived there were atstarvation and Capt. Pottenger took them to Pottenger's Station.
All above information is with my material on Pottinger's Station---each member of the Pottinger Family should have a copy.
Nora Lee McGee
(Not sure of the spelling of that last name. The writing was hard toread)...
