JOHN, 1551-54; Steward, &c., of C anford andConstable of Corfe Castle, 21 March 1449/50; esc orted Mary of Guise,Queen Dowager of Scotland, on her visi t to London, 31 October-6November 1551; was (with his fath er) one of the signatories, 21 June,of the letters patent , 16 June 1553, settling the Crown on Lady JaneGrey; but ( with his father) received Philip of Spain on his arrival at Southampton, 20 July 1554. He was summoned to Parliamen t v.p., 3October 1554, in his father's Barony as LORD ST . JOHN, taking hisseat, 12 November following. Lord Lieute nant of Dorset, May 1557, andGovernor of the Isle of Wight , 30 January--29 October 1558; JointKeeper (with his fathe r) of Alice Holt and Woolmer Forests for life,29 January 1 560/1; was one of the peers for the trial of the Duke ofNo rfolk, 16 January 1571/2; Keeper of St. Andrew's Castle, Ha mble,March 1571/2. He married, 1stly, before 20 October 15 28, Elizabeth,daughter and coheir (of the estates only) o f Robert (WILLOUGHBY), 2ndLORD WILLOUGHBY DE BROKE, by hi s 2nd wife, Dorothy, daughter ofThomas (GREY), 1st MARQUES S OF DORSET. She presumably died before 4April 1552. He ma rried, 2ndly, between 10 March and 24 April 1554,Elizabeth , widow of Gregory. (CROMWELL), 1st BARON CROMWELL (die d 4July 1551), and formerly of Sir Anthony UGHTRED (died s hortly before20 December 1534), sister of Jane, QUEEN CONS ORT to HENRY VIII, andof the Protector EDWARD, 1st DUKE O F SOMERSET, daughter of Sir JohnSEYMOUR, of Wolf Hall, Wil ts, by Margery, daughter of Sir HenryWENTWORTH, K.B., de j ure (according to modern doctrine), 4th LORD LEDESPENSER , of Nettlestead, Suffolk. She was living, 13 March 1561/2 ,and probably died before 9 June 1563, being buried at Bas ing. Hemarried, 3rdly, before 30 September 1568, Winifred , widow of SirRichard SACKVILLE (died 21 April 1566), daug hter of Sir John BRUGES,or BRYDGES, sometime (1520) Lord M ayor of London, by Agnes, daughterof Thomas AYLOFFE, of Br etons, Essex. He died 4 November 1576 atChelsea and was bu ried at Basing. His widow, by whom he had no issue,died o n or shortly after 16 June 1586 at Chelsea and was buried i nWestminster Abbey. M.l.
