NEHGR 47: 453 ff Griffin Bowen of Boston by Edward A Bowan: GriffithBowen of Boston, belonged to the family of the "Bowens of Slade." in theparish of Oxwich, Gower, Glamorgan, Wales. He finds three pedigree of the family. One deposited in the College of Arms, London, begins with Belil Mawr, King of Britain, 55 B.C.and ends with the genreation of "Griffith Bowen of Barryhead" They came ove rshortly after Sep 1638. He returned to England and lived in London and "sometime" in New
England.
Griffith Bowen, gentleman, Puritan immigrant to Boston, Mass., in thewinter of 1638-9, from the parish of Langenith, in the districtof Gower,Glamorganshire, South Wales, son of Francis and Ellen (Franklin) Bowen, was born not long after the
year 1600, probably in Langenith (where his widowed mother continued tolive in 1638). He married, not far from 1627, Margaret, daughter of HenryFleming.....In 1638, till the middle of September, Griffith and Margaretwere selling divers
pieces of real estate in Gower, and on February 6, 1639, they were 'takenin for members of ye congregation' in Boston, New England.....Returningto Wales about 1650, he left......He resided many yearsinSwansea,Glamorganshire, South Wales,
but by 1669 he had taken up his residence in London, in the parish of St.Saviour, Southwark, where probably he died in 1675. Of Margaret's death, the place and date, we lack positive information."
Griffith Bowen, born Langeuith, Gower, Wales, d. England1676.....Griffith came to Boston with his family in 1638. He and his wifeMargaret Fleming joinedthe First Church of Boston. Near his home lot inBoston at the corner of what are now
Essex and Washington streets stood the historic 'Liberty Tree' saidtohave been planted in 1646 by Griffith Bowen and cut down by Tories in1775.WithPeter Oliver in 1649 Griffith was chosen to do survey work atMuddy River, buthe returned
to England where he died."
"It is not known when GriffithBowen, son of Francis, was born, or where, but it is assumed that he was born at 'West Slade' where his father,Francis, lived. The first records of GriffithBowen in Wales are dated in1606. He emigrated to
Boston, Mass. in 1638 with his wife and at least six children. Heacquired considerable property in New England and lived there until 1649.When he returned to Wales, he left some of his family in the UnitedStates. Among them was his son,
Henry. When Griffith died in Wales in 1676, his property in the UnitedStates was divided between his sons, Francis, William, and Henry."
Both he wife Royal Descent from Henry I,King ofEngland d 1135

Poet Robert Frost is a descendant
!From "Ancestry of William Chandler of Roxbury, Mass" (NEHGR Vol.85(1931)):
A chandler by occupation as well as by name, born probably about 1475, was living 19 Mar., 2 Edward VI (1547/8), but died in or before HilaryTerm, 3 & 4 Edward VI (11 to 31 Jan 1550/1), since in a fine in that term, his son Thomas (whose wife Agnes also appears in the fine) is called "Thomas Chaundeler, Senior". He married about 1500 _____, who was buried in 1514 according to an entry in the account of the church wardens of Bishops-Stortford for that year.
As the court rolls of the manor of Stortford from 1399 to 1423 and the accounts of the church wardens of St. Michael's Church from 1431 have been preserved, and no Chandler's appear therein until this Thomas Chandler is mentioned in 1514, it may be inferred that he was the first of the family to settle at Bishops-Stortford. No will or administration of his estate has been found; and all that is known about him has been revealed by a few entries in the accounts of the church wardens and in the lay subsidies. The items in the churchwardens account are as follows:
1514 Item of Thomas Chaundeler for waste of Torch is at the buryyng of hiswife, xvj d.
1518 Item, delyverd to Andrew Clyfton and Thomas Chaundeler for to fyndew'alle a lyght before Seynt Myghell for a hole yere v s.
1521, 1522, 1536. Thomas Chaundeler a churchwarden.
1537. Palm Sunday. Inventory of church goods. Md, delyv'd to oldChaundeler ij canstiks (Candlesticks).
19 Mar, 2 Edward VI(1547/8). Inventory of church goods. Item, iiijcanstiks delyvered to old Chaundeler and Thomas Snowe. Item, wex weyng cvli sold by old Chaundeler.
This Thomas Chandler was taxed, as "Thomas Chaundeler" at Bishops-Stortford in the subsidy of 14 Henry VIII (1522/3), the amount of the tax being illegible, as "Thomas Chaundeler" in the subsidy of 34 Henry VIII (1542/3), the amount of the tax being 14s 8d; and as "Thomas Chaundler" in the subsidy of 37 Henry VIII (1545/6) on goods valued at D20, the amount of the tax being illegible (Lay Subsidies, Herts.,120/117, 121/160, 121/177, in the PRO, London). In the latter two of these subsidies his son "Thomas Chandeler, Junior" also appears.
