GILBERT PECCHE, brother and heir [of elder brother Geoffrey, dsp. bef. 29Sep 1188]. Before his brother's death he went on pilgrimage to the HolyLand. As a knight of the Abbot of Bury he took part in 1196 in thedispute between Abbot Sampson and his tenants about their services (j).He received the freedom of Ipswich under their recent charter, November1200. In 1201 he was assessed 58 marks for not having crossed the seaswith the King. He fined 100 marks in 1203-04 to have seisin of Bourn, andagain to send two knights in his place to John's campaign in Ireland in1210.
He married Alice, daughter of Walter FITZROBERT, lord of Dunmow, Essex,and sister of Robert F1TZWALTER. He died shortly before, 9 July 1212. His widow was living in 1213. [Complete Peerage X:333-4, (transcribed by DaveUtzinger)]
(j) He fined in 1199 for having his manor of Cheveley, and received fromJohn a charter confirming it, as his ancestors had held it, of the gift of Roger FitzRichard, and as the deeds they have thereof testified.

Burke says the marriage was 3 Apr 1127. The name Plantagenet, according to
Rapin, came from when Fulk the Great being stung from remorse for some wicked
action, in order to atone for it, went a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and was
scourged before the Holy Sepulchre with broom twigs. Earlier authorities say
it was because Geoffrey bore a branch of yellow broom (Planta-genistae) in
his helm.
