FREEMAN FAMILY
CONSPICUOUS AS FOUNDERS OF TOWNS--ALWAYS TO THE FORE IN PATRIOTIC
MOVEMENTS--SOME ROMANTIC STORIES HANDED DOWN--HERALDIC CHARGES DENOTE
WISDOM ANDPROBITY
Freeman is a name which speaks for itself, as far as its significance is
concerned. He who assumed it as a surname was a free man--liber
homo--John le Freeman, say, and not John le Bond.
Frewoman and Frewif, or Frewife, are forms found in ancient records. The
name is of good old Anglo-Saxon derivation. Variations are Le Fremans,
Fremund, and Fremond, also Franchome and Fraunchomme, which look like
very distant cousins, indeed. Ffreeman and ffreeman are of frequent
occurrence in colonial records.
An old seat of the familyis Fawley Court, Henley-upon-Thames, Oxford,
and the Freemans have lived at Yorkshire, and Shakespeare's home,
Stratford-upon-Avon, since time was.
Thegreat history of "The Norman Conquest" was written by the historian
of the family--Edward Freeman. One Thomas Freeman "set up for a poet,"
and was a friend of Shakespeare's. "Mrs. Freeman" was the Duchess of
Marlborough's alias when in intimate correspondence with her royal
mistress, Queen Anne, whom she addressed as "Mrs. Morley."
Edmund or Edmond Freeman came over in the Abigail,1635, with sons and
daughters, and lived first at Lynn, or helped to settle it. Samuel, who
came over in Gov. Winthrop's fleet, was a proprietor of Watertown, and is
called a brother of Edmund, who had the foresight to provide himself with
"plate-armor." He would show those Indians something of the scienceof
war. The armor, twenty pieces in all, was soon presented to the Colony,
and is probably still treasured as a relic.
PLYMOUTH COLONY. ITS HISTORY ANDPEOPLE 1620-1691, Part 3, Biographical
Sketches:
Dawes-Gates, pgs 349-64, gives a well-documented account showing that
Edmond Freeman was baptized 25 July 1596 at St. Mary's Church,
Pulborough, Sussex, the son of Edmond and (pg 294) Alice (Coles) Freeman,
and he d. 2 Nov 1692 at Sandwich, Plymouth Colony. He m. (1) at Cowfold,
Sussex, on 16 Jun 1617 Bennett Hodsoll, dau of John and Faith (______)
(Bacon) Hodsoll, who d. in 1630 at Pulborough and (2) Elizabeth, whose
surname is not know, but who may have been a widow Perry. He sailed for
New England with four surviving children and some other people with his
surname on the Abigail in July 1635, and he settled first at Saugus
(Lynn) in the Bay Colony. He was evidently the leader of the Saugus men
who moved in 1637 to Sandwich, and it was to him that a deed was granted
as agent for the others. He became an Assistant in Plymouth Coony, but
was not reelected in1646, and Edward Winslow wrote to Gov. John Winthrop
in Boston that "I suppose the country left (Freeman) our in regard of his
professed Anabaptistry & Separacon from the Churches" (MHS Collections,
4th Ser, 6:178). The Dawes-Gates account shows also the he was of an
unorthodox nature for his time and place, and was later sympathetic to
the Quakers. He had business interests of hisown in New England, and he
had a power of attorney in behalf of his brother-in-law John Beauchamp,
who had continued as one of the four London Undertakers after the other
Adventurers sold out their interests. His will dated 21 Jun1682, proved
2 Nov 1682, named his three "sons", Edmond Freeman, John Freeman and
Edward Perry (whose wife Mary has sometimes been assumed to have been a
dau of Edmond Freeman, but there is no evidence for this, and thus Perry
may have been the son of Freeman's second wife). Also named were his dau
Elizabeth Ellis, and his grandsons Mathias Freeman and Thomas Paddy (MD
12:248). His son Edmond m. (1) Rebecca Prence, dau of Thoma

[11546]
Louis II King Of Germany is often regarded as the founder of the German kingdom. After the death of his father, Louis I, in 1840, he joined with one brother, Charles the Bald, to fight another, Lothair I, for control of the empire. The Treaty of Verdun in 843 gave Louis all of Germany east of the Rhine River.

(Paul, Nouveau Larousse Universel, Page 86.)
(Stuart, Royalty for Commoners, Page 131, Line 172-41.)
(Andre Castelot, Histoire de La France, Tome 1, Page 369).
Also Known As: Louis "Le Germanique". AKA: Louis, King de Baviere. Born: either 804 or 806, son of Louis I, King de France and Ermengarde d'Esbay,Some sources assert that Louis was born in the year 806. There also issome disagreement as to whether this Louis should be Louis I or Louis II,King of Germany. The resolution to that disagreement lies in whether one can consider Louis' father as Louis I, King of Germany. Note-between 817and 876: King of Allemania from 817 to 876. Following a new division of the Empire in favor of Charles "Le Chauve", Louis II joined his brothers Lothaire and Pepin in a revolt against their father King Louis I, "LeDebonnaire" (also "Le Pieux") of France. When Lotaire became Emperor, Louis II joined him in a fight against Charles "Le Chauve". In 858, Louis leaves Worms and invades his brother Charles' kingdom, with the supportof Aquitaine and Bretagne. He begins to distribute the lands among countsand bishops. Charles in turn seeks refuge in Bourgogne. In Reims, on 25November 858, the conference of bishops condemns Louis for the cruelty ofhis troops, sending Christian against Christian, and brother againstbrother. On 7 June 860, the brothers are reconciled in Saint-Castor deCoblence. Meanwhile the Normands pillage Amiens, Noyon, Beauvais, theIberian peninsula and take Pisa in Italy. In 861, they devastate Paris.Upon the death of Lotaire II, Louis II got a part of Lorraine through theTreaty of Mersen (870). Married in 827 in Bavaria: Emma de Baviere, daughter of Welf, Count de Baviere . Died: on 28 Aug 876.

U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is a descendant.
Elizabeth was thought to be a widow when she married Richard Warren (Elizabeth Jonnet Marsh), and it was a second marriage for them both. There is a great debate that is still under way as to her correct surname. Some claim it was Pratt, others Jonnet, Jonatt, Joueatt, etc..The only thing the experts can agree on to date is that her first name was Elizabeth and she is the Mother of 5 daughters and two sons by Richard Warren.
Mrs. Warren was a woman of wealth and was rated in the Plymouth tax listof 1632/3 as of the first purchasers of Dartmouth. A study of the early records leads to the conclusion that she was a woman of force and social position in the community, and she is spoken of therein as "Mistress Elizabeth Warren" a designation by no means common. She is one of the rare instances in that early colony of continued widowhood. A glimpse ofone side of her domestic life is to be had in connection with the prosecution of her servant Thomas Williams July 5, 1635, for "Speaking profane and blasphemous speeches against the majesty of God." There being some dissension between him and his dame, she after other things exhorted him to fear God and do his duty. Her 5 daughters accompanied her on the"Ann" in 1623. Upon the marriage of her daughters, Mrs. Warren conveyed to their respective husbands certain lands, variously located at Eel River. She died in Plymouth Oct. 2, 1673, aged above 90 years. Beside the daughters brought from England they had two sons born in America.

The widow Elizabeth Warren survived her husband and proved herself competent to bring up her children, arranged marriages for all of them and managed the property left to her. She was taxed in 1632/3 at 12 shillings and the next year at 9 shillings. He lands bore namesreminiscent of former English homes and these are names that we still have south of here: Wellingsley, and Hobs Hole, and also she had a home that was called Slowly House.
1637: the Plymouth court recognized her as a Purchaser, as successor to her husband in 1637, in an order that first mentions the husbands of three of her daughters, "It is agreed upon by consent of the whole court that Elizabeth Warren, widow, the relict of Mr. Warren deceased, shall beentered and stand and be Purchaser instead of her husband as well because that he dying before he had performed the said bargain the said Elizabeth performed the same after his decease as also for establishing lots ofland formerly given by her unto her sone-in-law Richard Church, Robert Bartlet and Thomas Little in marriage with her daughters." The highway, when it was established towards Eel River, passed west of Robert Bartlett and Thomas Little and east of Mrs. Warren and Richard Church.
1661/2: In his will, her son Nathaniel Warren mentioned his wife and children and then a couple of weeks later he added a codicil mentioning his mother, his brother and all five of his married sisters. His mother survived Nathaniel by six years.
She was a woman of 'rare intellect' and 'genteel presence, carrying herself with such grace and dignity' that she became known throughout the Colonyas "mistress Warren", a designation by no means common. she survived her husband about forty-five years, and never married again, dying in 1673 at the age of 90.
1673, 2 [?22] Oct: Her death is recorded "Mistress Warren, an aged widow, above 90 years, deceased on the 2nd of Oct. 1673 who having lived a Godlylife came to her grave as a shock of corn fully ripe. She was honorably buried on the 24th of Oct. aforesaid." Nothing explains why they waited 22 days to bury her. Undoubtedly, the person who recorded it should have written that she died on the 22nd and not the 2nd.
