[15251]
Andrew Messenger is an ancestor of US President Millard Fillmore
Residence: by 1637, said to be in Connecticut by 1639, on Long Island, NY
ANDREW MESSENGER II was born about 1615 in England. It is not known for certain just when he came to America, whether with his Father or a bit later. He was here early on.
The ship Hector and another vessel brought the families of a solid group of St. Stephen's parishioners, who wintered in Massachusetts Bay Colony. The large group had not been in Boston long before many knew that conditions were not to their liking. In the autumn of 1637, they sailed south along the coast until they sighted a good harbor and the land north of it called "Quinnipac" which they purchased from friendly Indians.
Andrew Messenger was among the founders of the settlement of New Haven, Connecticut. At first it was governed under a "Plantation Covenant" now extant. In June 1639 the Fundamental Principles of a New Government, which is sometimes called the New Haven, "Fundamental Agreement," and is not to be confused with the "Fundamental Orders," signed at about the same time in Hartford, Connecticut. Andrew Messenger was one of the signers of the "New Haven Fundamental Principles or Agreement," which shows that he was one of the founders of New Haven, where he may have lived until 1656.
He was a witness, along with Robert Husted, to the signing of the deed from the Indians on July 18, 1640, when Robert Feake and Daniel Patrick, as agents for the New Haven, Connecticut Colony, purchased from the Indians the land where the settlement of Greenwich, Connecticut was immediately formed.
He either purchased or was granted a parcel of land in Greenwich where he may have lived. On the other hand, he may have continued living in New Haven and merely owned the Greenwich land, which on October 5, 1642 he sold to Robert Husted of Greenwich. On February 18, 1656, Andrew was granted land in Jamaica, Long Island, New York.
On March 10, 1656, he was one of the fourteen signers of a petition sent to the Governor General "Peter Stuyvesant, Esq." of New Netherlands, asking the council for the grant of a certain tract of land, purchased by them from the Indians, called Concrasset (Jamaica, Long Island.) The request was granted at Fort Amsterdam on March 21, 1656. Thus he is also one of the founders of Jamaica. Andrew Messenger II was a farmer and a carpenter.
On November 25, 1656, seventeen men, one of whom was Andrew Messenger signed a declaration that they were owners of the land by virtue of Purchased from the Indians and grant from the Governor and Council. Each man has reserved himself ten acres of "meadowing" and this shall remain in his and his heirs, executors and assignees for his proper right, every man taking his lot according to his first right of the land. Andrew was fourth according to his proper right among the seventeen men. This was according to their wealth.
On July 1, 1657, the seventeen men of the Jamaica Plantation divided themselves into four squadrons to do meadow cutting. Andrew was in the fourth squadron. They were to cut eastward from the creek in the Hasoky Meadow to the Skupash River. On June 29, 1658, the squadron drew lots as to where each should mow. Andrew's squadron drew the same lot as the year before. On March 25, 1659 Andrew drew the "Long Neck Meadow."
On February 18, 1660, at the town meeting the meadows were divided into four necks. Andrew's squadron drew the neck of meadow land where grew some haw trees along a stream which became known as the "Hawtree River." It was also voted that the squadrons would continue mowing the same meadows each year thereafter until the town was enlarged by more inhabitants.
The exact date on which Andrew first became a magistrate in Jamaica is not certain, but it is believed to have been early 1661 when he as "ordained and lawful magistrate" was under oath to uphold the law and arrest those found harboring Quakers. Only meetings of the Dutch Reformed Church, under the direction of the Church in Amsterdam were to be held. On February 1, 1656, and "Ordinance against Conventicles" had been passed. After receiving complaints concerning Quakers, Peter Stuyvesant, sent a letter on January 20, 1661 to the Magistrates concerning enforcement of the law. This was a hardship, for the soldiers were to be given free room and board. Jamaica was called "Rustdrop" by the Dutch.
On February 11, 1661, a reply was written to Gov. Stuyvesant concerning the Quakers and soldiers by William Denton, Clerk and signed by eighteen Magistrates, including Andrew Messenger, number eleven. A request was made to send the soldiers home.
On February 15, 1661, the Governor replied that the soldiers should remain there. On August 24, 1662, the Magistrates of Rustdrop, (Jamaica) sent in a complaint against the Quakers, that the majority of the inhabitants were Quakers who went to the home of John Bound (Bowne) in Flushing to hold meetings every Sunday. John was fined, imprisoned and exiled for holding Quaker meetings in his home. He went to Holland where he was vindicated by the Chamber of Amsterdam. He returned to Flushing, where he and his wife entertained in 1672, George Fox, the founder of the Quaker belief.
Also The Bowne House build in 1661 is still standing and is preserved as a local memorial to the Toleration Act of 1689 which put and end to this persecution of Quakers and other Dissenters.
On March 4, 1662, the governor again selected as Magistrates for Rustdrop, Robert Coe, Daniel Denton and Andrew Messenger.
On April 11, 1662, Andrew Messenger and his son-in-law, Richard Darling, entered into a contract with the Town of Rustdrop to erect a "Minister's house 26 foot long and 17 foot wide," In 1663, Andrew was appointed to buy land "off ye Indians."
On January 14, 1664, Andrew gave supper to two Dutch commissioners. The men returned by daybreak to Fort Amsterdam and reported on January 15. Andrew was not involved in the reason for the commissioners making the visit.
In 1664, the Providence of New Netherlands became the Colony of New York. In January 1664\5, Andrew sent to Richard Nicolls of Fort James, New York City, a complaint that a judgment had been wrongfully obtained against him by the "Overseers of the Poore of the Parish" in regard to a debt due from Francis Finch "whose town lot and personal estate" Andrew had purchased without having had the bill of sales "recorded according to custom." Since Jamaica had been under the protection of Connecticut Colony at the time of the purchase, Richard Nicolls, on February 3, 1664\5, ordered that it be leaned if it was then the law to have such purchases recorded. If so, Andrew Messenger was "liable to pay the sum in question." If not, he was to be paid "costs for his unjust molestation." The outcome was not found. He may have lost it, for according to town records, "In 1665 Andrew Messenger was granted a lot in Jamaica." As late as August 1673 and again on December 12, 1673, his name appears on the rate or tax list in Jamaica.
In a 1675 Assessors list for Huntington, Long Island he had two horses, two oxen, two cows and 12 acres of land of which six was in meadow. (He must have gone to Long Island like his Father did.)
In 1673 he went to Court to collect debt owed to him in the city of New Orange (present day New York City.)
