Morgan County Family History - Morgan Co., IL (1976)
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BRATTON
From Robert Moss, 901 William, Omaha, NE 68108 on January 19,
1996:
"Benjamin was deeded 69 acres on Muddy Creek, part of his
grandfather's farm, by his father, Robert on 23 Sep 1795. He
received a patent from the state of North Carolina on 11 Oct
1796 to 90 acres on Caraway Creek. This 90 acres was
described as corner to Brattan's old line (old John
Brattain's grant line), John Brattain's corner (Benjamin's
brother John), and his own line (Randolph Co. Deeds 6:209,
9:57). These tracts were included in the conveyance made by
Benjamin Brattain and John White to Jean (Jane) Gray on 22
Sep 1804 (Randolph Co. Deeds 12:45). This 200 acre tract was
described as on Caraway and Muddy Creeks by lands of Mr.
McDade and John Elder. Benjamin F. signed his name as Ben
Brattan. Ben was recorded in the 1800 and 1810 census of
Randolph County. In 1800 his family was 1 male aged 26-45
(himself); 2 males age 1-10 (William and Thomas); 1 female
26-45 (wife Mary); and 2 females 0-10 (Rachel and Deidamiah).
In 1810 the family was 1 male 26-45; 2 males 10-16; 3 males
0-10 (Paul, Ben, ?); 1 female 26-45; 1 female 10-16 (Rachel
or Delilah); and 2 females 0-10 (Deidamiah, Mary). Benjamin
Brittain, along with the Ausmus families was listed in Duncan
Neile's Co. in the 1812 tax list for Bedford County, TN.
Ben's widow Mary and family were listed in Powers Twp., Bond
Co., IL in the 1820 census, where they had settled about
1817. Mary and family moved to Morgan County in the mid
1820's and on 30 Nov 1827 she made a land entry on the East
half Northeast quarter, Section 35 T16N R11W but later
assigned her rights to her son Benjamin. Mary was listed as
head of family in the Morgan County censuses of 1830 and
1835. She died prior to 1 Feb 1849 (18 Jan 1849) when
letters of administration were issued to her son-in-law
William Moss (Morgan Co. Estates, #90). Distribution from
the estate was made to five living children (Deidamiah, Paul,
Benjamin, Jonathan, Elizabeth) and the children of three
deceased children (Rachel, Delilah, Mary).
