[hughbuckner.FTW][Brøderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree #3634, Date of Import: Apr. 14, 2001] John was the first Buckner to come to America. He had four sons, of whom Richard was the most prominent (in fact, little is known of the others).
1667 granted a land patent of 194 acres in Gloucester County, Virginia (Gloucester County was formed from York in 1642)
1668 granted additional land: from then on, constantly added to his estate
1671 member of the Vestry of Petsworth Parish, Gloucester
1683 member of House of Burgesses, as well as being Clerk of Gloucester County.
Records show that he was a wealthy, influential member of the community; one of the most respected merchants and progressive colonists. He was well educated, and prominent in civic affairs. He was the agent of various London merchants.
It is gathered that he was attorney for various London merchants and that his business relations with the best families in the colony were of an intimate and extensive nature. He was the first man to introduce a printing press to the Colony of Virginia, in spite of contrary arguments from some of his peers.
"The Buckners of Virginia"
Marriage Record:
Entry in the Registry of the Vicar General of Canterbury: "July 10, 1661. John Buckner of St. Sepulchre's, citizen and salter of London, Bach. about 31, and Debora Ferrers of West Wickham, Bucks about 19; with consent of her mother, now wife of Andrew Hunt of the same, at West Wickham."
It is believed that John and Deborah left for Virginia soon after their marriage. All of their children were probably born in Virginia.

In April, 1669, the town records state: "John Sharpe and James Gibbins,
jr., is appointed to sit in the seate with Simion Booth in the foremost
seat: And their wives are to sit in the third seate with Simion Booth's
wife and John Lighton's wife." In a seating list of the women in the
meeting-house, made on December 9, 1674, Goodwife Gibbins was assigned to
the fourth seat, together with Goodwife Silly, possibly her mother.
Gibbins served on a trial jury in 1669, on Saco coroner's jury on the
deathof David May by suicide in 1670, and it was probable he and not his
father who was foreman of an Isle of Shoals jury of inquest on the body
of William Taylor, December 31, 1677. As his father had already held the
office as early as 1655, the son may well have been the Saco constable of
1676, although "jr."is not added to the name. He is also perhaps more
probably the lieutenant ofthe local military company in 1674 when the
record states "Lieut. Gibbins his horse allowed on." In 1670 he
contributed 50s. when a group of Saco men joined to raise security for
their troublesome fellow citizen Mr. John Bonython, and in 1675 he sued
Bonython for taking and detaining his goods. As he died before his
parents he does not figure in land transactions.
