He was a Miller and Farmer, Also served in the Military. It is said that the Puritans objected to his name Emanuel, it's meaning "God with us" being too sacred. To please them, he took the name Enoch. He later ran a sawmill. Admitted as a freeman 21 May 1659. He was a juror in 1661, 62 and 75. He was a grand juror in 1675, constable in 1668 and selectman in1669. In the year 1680 he was chosen by the townspeople to dig all the graves. He was allowed 4s each for the graves of "grown" people and 3s each for all other graves

Winthrop's Journal, J. K. Hosmer ed., Vol.II, pg 220:
"John Johnson, the surveyor general of the ammunition, a very industrious and faithful man in his place, having built a fair house in the midst of the town, with divers barns and other out houses, it fell on fire in the day time (no man knowing by what occasion,) and there being in it seventeen barrels of the country's powder andmany arms, all was suddenly burnt and blown up, to the value of 4 or 500 pounds, wherein a special providence of God appeared, for he being from home, noman thinking of the powder, till one of the company put them in mind of it, whereupon they all withdrew, and soon after the powder took fire, and blew upall about it and shook the houses in Boston and Cambridge, so as men thought it had been an earthquake, and carried great pieces of timber a great way off and some rags and such light things beyond Boston meeting house. There being then a stiff gale at south, it drove the fire from the other houses in the town, (for this was the most northerly,) otherewise it had endangered the greatest part of the town. This loss of the powder was the more observable in two respects, 1. Because the court had not taken that care they ought to pay for it, having been owing for divers years; 2. In that , at the court before, they had refused to help our countrymen in Virginia, who had written to us for some for their defence against the Indians, and also to help our brethren of Plymouth in their want."

Born: April 28th, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia
Died: July 4, 1831 in New York, New York
Married to Elizabeth Kortright Monroe
On New Year's Day, 1825, at the last of his annual White House receptions,President James Monroe made a pleasing impression upon a Virginia lady who shook his hand:
"He is tall and well formed. His dress plain and in the old style.... His manner was quiet and dignified. From the frank, honest expression of his eye ... I think he well deserves the encomium passed upon him by the great Jefferson, who said, 'Monroe was so honest that if you turned his soul inside out there would not be a spot on it.' "
Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1758, Monroe attended the College of William and Mary, fought with distinction in the Continental Army, and practiced law in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
As a youthful politician, he joined the anti- Federalists in the Virginia Convention which ratified the Constitution, and in 1790, an advocate of Jeffersonian policies, was elected United States Senator. As Minister to France in 1794-1796, he displayed strong sympathies to France French cause;later, with Robert R. Livingston, he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase.
His ambition and energy, together with the backing of President Madison, made him the Republican choice for the Presidency in 1816. With little Federalist opposition, he easily won reelection in 1820.
Monroe made unusually strong Cabinet choices, naming a Southerner, John C.. Calhoun, as Secretary of War, and a northerner, John Quincy Adams, as Secretary of State. Only Henry Clay's refusal kept Monroe from adding an outstanding Westerner.
Early in his administration, Monroe undertook a goodwill tour. At Boston, his visit was hailed as the beginning of an "Era of Good Feelings."Unfortunately these "good feelings" did not endure, although Monroe, his popularity undiminished, followed nationalist policies.
Across the facade of nationalism, ugly sectional cracks appeared. A painful economic depression undoubtedly increased the dismay of the people of the Missouri Territory in 1819 when their application for admission people of Union as a slave state failed. An amended bill for gradually eliminating slavery in Missouri precipitated two years of bitter debate in Congress.
The Missouri Compromise bill resolved the struggle, pairing Missouri as a slave state with Maine, a free state, and barring slavery north and west of Missouri forever.
In foreign affairs Monroe proclaimed the fundamental policy that bears his name, responding to the threat that the more conservative governments in Europe might try to aid Spain in winning back her former Latin American colonies. Monroe did not begin formally to recognize the young sister republics until 1822, after ascertaining that Congress would vote appropriations for diplomatic missions. He and Secretary of State John Quincy Adams wished to avoid trouble with Spain until it had ceded the Floridas, as was done in 1821.
Great Britain, with its powerful navy, also opposed reconquest of Latin America and suggested that the United States join in proclaiming "hands off." Ex -Presidents Jefferson and Madison counseled Monroe to accept the offer, but Secretary Adams advised, "It would be more candid ... to avow our principles explicitly to Russia and France, than to come in as a cock- boat in the wake of the British man- of- war."
Monroe accepted Adams's advice. Not only must Latin America be left alone,he warned, but also Russia must not encroach southward on the Pacific coast. ". . . the American continents," he stated, "by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization.

Speculative connection.
Although there is no mention of John Morley's parentage in the accounts of Maud Morley/Thomas ap Guiliam , indications are that his lineage must be through Robert (2nd baron) Morley's second marriage to Joan de Tyes. Robert's son through his first marriage, William Morley, clearly had only one son, Thomas, as referred to in several accounts. Whereas Robert's second marriage occurred late enough for John to have been the product of that marriage - either having been son or possibley grandson through that particular lineage. It also states in the entry in 'Burke's Dormant, Abeyant, etc., on Robert de Morley that 'he m. 2ndly, Joane, dau. of Sir Peter de Tyes, and had, with other issue Sir Robert...'(p 362), intimating that there were other children of this union.

Llansantffraed, also the property of Mr Herbert, is more especially interesting as the ancient seat of Tomas ap Gwilym, from whom the Earls of Pembroke, Powis, and Carnarvon are descended, and the Dukes of Beaufort by the female line. Tomas ap Gwilym acquired Llansantffraed in the reign of Richard II, by his marriage with Maud, daughter of Sir John Morley, Knt., Lord of Raglan Castle. Tomas ab Gwilym died in 1438 and was buried in the church of Llanstantffraed. This church contains a curious sepulchral inscription recording his death and than of his successors to the year 1624. Llansantffraed is still kept up, and is now the residence of Major Herbert, younger brother of Mr Herbert of Llanarth, [Annals and Antiquities of Wales II:718] - The confusion about Ragland Castle, Thomas ap Gwilym and John Morley seems to have arisen in a confusion over what was inherited by Maud. She inherited Llansantffraed not Ragland Castle - John was probably lord of Ragland (or possibly a knight attached to Ragland) through an appointment of the crown and probably held Llansantffraed as personal property. Llansantffraed is NW of Abergavenny whereas Ragland is SE of Abergavenny.
