Sudbury until 1664, Marlborough proprietor, returned to Sudbury. Edmund Rice and His Family, p. 50 "Thomas Rice, the son of Edmund, who fled Marlboro at the time of the Indian raid, never returned, but remained apparently in Sudbury for the rest of his life where he bought several small parcels of land from various people. His life was nota long one, for he died in 1681 when he was only about fifty-five years old, leaving Mary with several small children to bring up, the youngest, Elisha, only two years old. He left a will giving to his three older sons land in Marlboro where they wereprobably living. To the fourth son, Ephraim, he gave land in Sudbury to be his as soon s he became of age. The rest of his property he left to his wife who should divide it later between the yourger children. Mary must have been an unusual woman, capable and independent. Unlike most widows, she never married again, but brought up her sons and daughters alone and did a marvelous job at it.
She gave to James and Jonas land in Marlboro and Sudbury soon after they were married. To Elisha also she deeded Sudbury land. In her will she gave to each of her older sons five shillings, to each daughter ten pounds and they were to divide her household goods between them; she made the youngest son, Elisha, executor of her will and gave to him the rest of her property, "my Houseing Lands--and Tenements in Sd. Sudbury." It is easy to read between the lines the particular love she bore this youngest son, the comfort of her widowhood, her baby whom she had reared alone.
Mary died about 1715, an old lady over eighty, having seen many changes form the hadships of early pioneering days; she had experience cold, hardship, and Indian raids; she had seen her children all grow up into sturdy, useful, responsible men and women, a credit to their father she had missed so many years; she had known sorrow and worry, and death,--the kidnapping of the little grandchildren, Ashur and Adonijah, and the death at the hands of Indians of her daughter Mary's fifteen-year-old son Jonathan (White)..." Resided in Sud. till 1664, when he moved to Marl., of which township hewas a proprietor. He d. Nov 16, 1681. He had thirteen children, six of whom were b. in Sudbury, the rest in Marlboro'.

M. Mary, and resided at Sud. and Marl., to the latter of which he removedabout 1664. The births of six chil. are recorded at Sud., and thoseothers, younger chil., at M., of which he was a proprietor. He d. thereNov. 16, 1681.
The Boston Gazette of Dec. 26, 1768, contains a communication on thesubject of the longevity of his children, in which it is said he d. "at the age of 70 years;" consequently, born about 1611. That his "age was70 years" is manifestly an error, as it makes him only 17 years younger than his father, and about 43 years old before he had a family, neitherof which is probable. Further notice of the publication in the Gazette will be taken when we come to speak of his children under theirrespective family heads.
Will of Thomas Rice, Nov. 11, 1681, proved April 4, 1682, gave to sonsThomas, Peter, Nathaniel and Ephraim, residue to wife Mary, and at her decease to go to "the younger children not mentioned above." "My threebrothers, Henry and Mathew Rice and Peter King to be overseers of my will, " &c. Will of his widow Mary, "May 10, in the 8th year (1710) of Queen Ann's reign," proved April 11, 1715, gave to sons Thomas of Marlboro', Peter, Nathaniel, Ephraim, Gershom, James, Jonas and Elisha, to daughters Mary White, Sarah Adams, Frances Allen and Grace Moore.
