From c1173 to 1230 successive fathers, sons, and younger brothers calledde Briouze were feudal lords of Abergavenny. William de Briouze, thefirst of them, who derived his name from his lordship of Briouze in Normandy, married the sister and coheir of the 2nd Earl of Hereford (also daughter of 1st Earl) mentioned above, which seems to account for his coming into possession of a lordship in that part of the Welsh marches.[Burke's Peerage]
-------------------------------
OWNERS of the LORDSHIP of ABERGAVENNY (X) 1173?
William de Briouze (e), Lord of Briouze in Normandy, and of Bramber,Sussex, son and heir of Philip de Briouze, be Aenor, daughter and heir ofJuhel son of Alvred, Lord of Barnstaple and Totnes. He married, in orbefore 1150, Bertha, 2nd sister and coheir of William of Hereford beingdaughter of Miles of Gloucester, 1st Earl of Gloucester (sic. Earl ofHereford). Sheriff of Hereford, Easter 1173-75, at which earlier date probably he already possessed the Lordship of Over Gwent. He was livingin 1179. [Complete Peerage I:21-2, XIV:6, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(e) Briouze-Saint-Gervais (formerly Braiose), arrond. of Argentan, dept.of Orne. His descendants spelt the name Brewes. In some 25 earlyreferences to this name, not in charter latin, it appears as Breouse,Breuse, or Brewys (the last of which still exists as a surname), but never as Braose, the form adopted in peerages, for which it seems doubtful if there be any good authority.
Note: The above text "1st Earl of Gloucester", which was part of acorrection in CP XIV:6, is a mistake; Miles was Earl of Hereford.
-------------------------------
William was very fortunate in his marriage to Berta. All of her brothers died young without heirs, so she brought a number of important lordships to the de Braoses in 1166. These included Brecon and Abergavenny.William became Sheriff of Hereford in 1174. His interest in Sussex was maintained as he confirmed the grants of his father and grandfather for the maintenance of Sele Priory and extended St Mary's, Shoreham.
See St Mary's, Shoreham, Sussex.
William m. Berta, dau. of Milo de Gloucester, Earl of Hereford, and co-heir of her brother, William, Earl of Hereford, by whom he acquiredBrecknock, with other extensive territorial possessions. He had two sons,William and Reginald, and was s. by the elder. The Story of The Pilgrim Fathers; 1897, by Edward Arber:
There is also one PHILIP DE LA NOYE [afterwards corrupted to Delano],
born of French Parents, came to us from Leyden, to New Plymouth: who,
coming to age of discerning, demanded also communion with us; and,
proving himself to be come of such parents as were in full communion with
the French Churches, was hereupon admitted by the Church of Plymouth. And
after, upon his removal of habitation to Duxbury, where Master Ralph
Partridge is Pastor ofthe Church; and upon Letters of Recommendation
from the Church at Plymouth: he was also admitted into fellowship with
the Church at Duxbury, being six miles distant from Plymouth. And so, I
dare say, if his ocasions lead him, may [be admitted] from Church to
Church throughout New England."
DELANO, PHILIP was a member of the Separatist Church at Leiden, bom of
French parents, and had been in communion with the French (Walloon)
church (Winslow, Hypocrisie Unmasked, p. 64). He arrived at Plymouth on
the Fortune in 1621, was a Purchaser, and was on the 1633 freeman list.
He made the first recorded land sale in Plymouth after the institution of
private property; in 1627 he sold to Stephen Deane for 4 pounds, one acre
of land (obviously his share of the 1623 land division) on the north side
of town between the first and second brooks, adjoining the land of Moses
Simonson on one side and Stephen Deane on the other (PCR 12:7). Delano
deposed in 1641 that he was about thirty-six years old (Lechford's
Notebook, p. 420). In 1637 he volunteered for the Pequot War (PCR 1:61).
On 2 October 1637 he was given forty acres of land in Duxbury, adjoining
the lands of John Alden and Edward Bumpus (PCR 1:67).
He served on various juries and commissions, especially grand juries
(PCR, passim).
He was on the 1662 list of first-born children to get land at
Middleborough (PCR 4:19).
Philip Delano married (1) Hester Dewsbury on 19 December 1634 (PCR 1:32).
Hemarried (2) Mary (Pontus) Glass, widow of James, sometime between 3
September 1652 (death of James Glass -Pope) and 3 December 1659 (when his
wife Mary joined him in a deed-Ply. Colony LR 2:2:41).
On 3 May 1664 Hannah Churchill, widow, asked that one-half the lands
granted to William Pontus be given to her; the court, with the consent of
Philip Delano and his wife Mary, the other daughter of William Pontus,
granted her request (PCR 4:58).
On 5 July 1682 Philip's sons Thomas and Samuel (Samuel was called the
only son of the second wife) agreed to follow what they knew to be the
intent of their father, now deceased, for the distribution of his estate;
his other children sharing the estate were John, Jane, Rebecca, and
Philip (MD 11:250). Besides the six namedchildren, he also had Jonathan,
Mary, and Esther. A comprehensive family history with a large number of
errors and awkward manner of presentation is JoelAndrew Delano, The
Genealogy, History, and Alliances of the American House of Delano 1621 to
1899 (New York, 1899). (See also Kerry William Bate, "Some Delano
Questions," (TAG 52:91), and "Some Delano Answers," (TAG 53:172).
Oneof Philip's sons, Thomas Delano, married a daughter of John Alden, as
is shown by signatures on Alden's estate settlement dated 13 June 1688
(MD 3:11), but which daughter has been controversial. Daugher Mary had
been accepted, butin 1947 the Society of Mayflower Descendants decided
that it had to be daughter Rebecca instead. The matter had been
thoroughly aired in 1932-33 by letters from various genealogists to the
Boston Transcript genealogy column. Daughter Mary had signed the 1688
Alden settlement as Mary Alden, with her signature immediately above
Thomas Delano's. This in itself would show that in 1688 she was still an
Alden, not a Delano. Thomas Delano was married before 30 October 1667
when the court fined him 10pounds for
