INDEX

[7314] During the lives of Carey Allen 1802 to 1865 and of Henry Mason Van Cleave, his son, 1825 to 1858, the period is characterized by Transport Revolutions and slavery in the agriculture of the state of Kentucky.

Carey Allen's namesake was a Presbyterian Circuit Riding Minister. The Indian problem was under control, Kentuckians at least subconsciously missed that epic struggle of the last half century; the fear, horror, excitment and moments of bloody triumph they had known. In search of something else to take its place, charismatic super preachers attracted great throngs of sinners at Camp Meeting revival sessions. They were Presbyterians, Methodist, and Calvinist Baptist. They may have caught the hearts of Carey Allen's parents Aaron and Rachel

"Steam is crowding our eastern cities with western flour...," wrote an observer in 1841. Steaming from New Orleans to Louisville in days versus the keelboat's months, paddle wheelers setriver towns on a growth course. In 1825 New York's Erie Canal sparked a frenzyof state sponsored canal building, often at crippling cost. Soon the Ohio Valley was linked by water to New York City via the Great Lakes. Canals boosted land sales and, by forcing down freight rates, fostered commercial farming in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Built piecemeal, the National Road to Vandalia, Illinois, offered shippers of eastbound goods a poor alternative to canals and the sea route via New Orleans.

Faster and more flexible than canals, railroads--for the most part privately financed--tied the area north of the Ohio to the Northeast in the 1850s. Cities at junctions thrived on meat- packing, flour milling, and other food processing.
