John Parmenter
[23225]
[23226]
1588 - 1 May 1671
Family 1
: Annis (Agnes) Bayford
There is conflicting information about Mary. She was married to John Woods, Oct 10, 1633 in Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, England and may have come earlier with her husband. Or the Woods couple may have come with the Parmenters. Or John Woods may have preceded the family and Mary separately made the 1639 trip with her folks, with three small children.
Will: 25 Mar 1671
Will Proved 25 Jul 1671
names wife Annis, daughter Mary Woods wife of John Woods, grandson John Parmenter, cousin Bartholomew Cheevers shoemaker of Boston, and cousin John Stibbins
In Sudbury, Mass. in 1639, Roxbury 1660. Deacon. Commissioner. Selectman.
------------
"John Parmenter Sr., son of William Parmenter, was born about 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada during the reign of Elizabeth I. The church records of the 1st Church of Roxbury, Massachusetts, list his age as 83 at the time of his death on May 1, 1671. "John, formerly Deacon at Sudbury, a. 83 y.".
I believe John Sr. moved to Bures St. Mary, Suffolk County, Englandbefore his father's death in 1617. It is impossible to know why John decided to move some 10 miles eastward to Bures St. Mary. He inheritedlittle from his father and was without a land holding to support afamily. Also, 17th Century New England probate records refer to John Sr.and his son as tailors. The move to Bures St. Mary may have been promptedby a wish to pursue a trade. It is known that Parmenter families had been residents in the Bures area for nearly a century but the familial relationships to John Sr. are unknown. The reasons for his leaving LittleYeldham will likely remain a mystery.
According to the parish registers of Bures St. Mary, Sara, a younger sister of John Sr., married John Cressall at that parish on October 4,1616. John Cressall died in 1625 and John Parmenter Sr. is mentioned in his brother-in-law's will dated at Bures Hamlet on July 9, 1625. "I gyveto my brother in law John Parmenter my best cowe".
John Sr. appears as a witness to the will of Henry Loker on February 22,1630/31 at Bures St. Mary. A comparison of his signature on the will of Henry Loker and on Sudbury town documents reveal that the signatures were made by the same hand. We are indeed fortunate to have such conclusive proof of the English origins of our emigrant ancestor. Also it is interesting to note that John Sr. was at least literate enough to sign his name while the original wills of his grandfather and father bear only their identifying marks.
John Parmenter married Bridget--about 1609. He likely married Bridget at Bures St. Mary, but there is a frustrating gap in the parish registersfrom 1604-1612. Bridget was probably the sister of Elizabeth Loker, thewife of Henry. The parish registers for Bures show there were two pairs of sisters named Bridget and Elizabeth baptized within the appropriate time period. William Perry had daughters Elizabeth and Bridgett baptized in 1586/87 and 1593 respectively. John Simpson had a daughter Bridget baptized in 1585/86 and a daughter Elizabeth in 1588.
John Parmenter's daughter Mary married John Woods at Bures St. Mary on October 10, 1633.
In the late 1630's John Parmenter Sr. surrendered his holdings to the lord of the manor and began his journey to the new world. With him went his wife Bridget, children John Jr. and Mary Woods with her husband John. Also included in his party was Elizabeth Loker, the widow of Henry and two of her sons, John and Henry.
These Parmenter migrants must have approached their journey with fear and apprehension. Most Englishmen of the day knew only the life of their village and the surrounding parishes. In some ways London must have seemed as distant as Rome. Stories of storms and ship wrecks must have dissuaded many from undertaking such a voyage. Before the great migration of the 1630's only professional travelers, merchants and mariners experienced ocean travel. While our Parmenter ancestors were islanders living within 50 miles of the sea, like most agrarian peoples they had no familiarity with the ways of the sea. Very few 17th Century English men had been to sea at all. Ordinary people traveled by land, picking their way along ancient ridge routes or took to the mud and dust of ill made and maintained roads. Our ancestors were part of the over 21,000 people who emigrated to the English colonies from 1630-1643.
By 1639 they and approximately 180 others had settled at Sudbury in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Arriving in Sudbury these early settlers had little time to prepare adequate shelters and initially they probably built houses more reminiscent of the sod busters of the great plains of 200 years later or Indian wigwams rather than the houses of a 17th Century English manor.
The name Sudbury was assigned by the Massachusetts General Court in honorof Edmund Brown, the first minister of Sudbury who had served as aminister in Sudbury, Suffolk. Sudbury settlers ordered their townaccording to Puritan ideals and the cooperative open field system ofagriculture that they had known in England. The townsmen however abandoned almost every English institution they had known for centuries. Life in Sudbury was truly a "New" England, a remarkable experiment in a new way of life and government.
John Parmenter Sr. and his son John Jr. were original proprietors of Sudbury and were assigned lands in May 1640 by the General Court. John Sr. was granted freeman status on May 13, 1640 along with his son-in-law John Woods.
He was active in town affairs throughout his years in Sudbury. He was first elected to town office as a highway surveyor along with Peter Noyes on September 4, 1639, the same day the town was incorporated. Robert Noyes, a direct descendent of Peter, today serves as Sudbury's highway surveyor. John Sr. served four terms as fence viewer, the office was a successor to the manorial office of Hayward. He served one term as invoice taker and eight terms as selectman and was electedjudge of small causes in 1655. John Sr. and his son were also licensed torun a tavern or ordinary in their home, which was to be the meeting place of the Massachusetts General Court during the Sudbury land sizing controversy of 1655. John Parmenter Sr. was also a Deacon of the Sudbury church beginning about 1654/55.
John's wife Bridget died on April 6, 1660. His son John died in April1666. They are both likely buried in the graveyard adjacent to the site of the first Sudbury Meeting House.
John was last elected selectman on February 17, 1661/62. After that date his name is no longer found in town records.
About 1662 he moved to Roxbury where he married Annis (Bayford) (Chandler) Dane. Annis was the daughter of Francis and Joan Bayford. She was baptized in Farnham, Essex Co., England on June 12, 1603. Annis first married William Chandler and after his death in 1642 she married John Dane in 1643., John Dane died in1658. Annis then became the second wife of John Parmenter Sr.
Deacon John Parmenter Sr. died at Roxbury on May 1, 1671. His will dated March 25, 1671 mentions his wife Annis, his grandson John of Sudbury, daughter Mary Woods and her husband John of Marlborough, Massachusetts. His age at death is recorded in Roxbury records as 83 years of age.
Annis Parmenter died at Roxbury on March 17, 1682/83. An entry in the Roxbury church records states, "Old Mother Parminter (sic), a blessed Saint"."
