Emigration: 1635 Wales
He was an original land owner in Windsor, CT
Copied from 'Descendants of William Buell who came to America from England about 1631', compiled and published by Nathan Deloss Buell.
"William, on at least one occasion acknowledged the spelling of his nameas BEWLLE. The spelling of BUELL was assigned to William by the Recorder in Windsor or in Dorchester where he and his mother Mary, first landed and that spelling remains except that some descendants elected to use BUEL instead of BUELL. I believe that no one has yet found what ship (note: "The Mary & John" has been penciled in) and what year exactly brought Wiliam and his mother to this land. The many sailings of the WINTHROP FLEET in 1631 makes me believe that 1631 was the probable year because after 1631 most of the passengers names were recorded and have been traced. It is known that William and his mother settled on a landclaim in what became Windsor, by 1635. Maps of this Windsor settlement show the Buell name as many others. These maps are available from Windsor Historical Society, 96 Palisado Avenue, Windsor, CT 06095. I believe they cost about $2.00 each.
The Bewlles and Bevilles in England from the year 1066 to the presentbore names of at least sixteen different spellings. There is good reasonfor that when one understands the causes. The two Knights, brothers William and Humphrey de Beville, who came to England from Normandy with William the Conqueror were the ancestors of the Buells and Bevilles in America. Any Descendant of William Buell has the right to use some of many Coat of Arms used by descendants of Humphrey or William de Beville.
A wonderful book by Asselia Lichliter titled SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS OF THE BEVILLE FAMILY is well worth reading to get an idea of the family during this period in England. Asselia Lichliter's address is: 3133 Connecticut Avenue, Washington, DC 20008. The book is still available and is $25.00.Asselia told this compiler that she felt that our line could well be from the Eastrey Beville branch. I have visited in England some of the known places of Beville residence and of worship. For the past sixteen years I have used various researchers in England to find the parents of our William but to no avail. It is certain that he is not the son of Sir Robert Beville as some have claimed. I have a copy of the probated will of William Beville, son of Sir Robert Beville, probated 1638. That William was one of two sons and was born in 1610. Signed Nathan Deloss Buell, Compiler."
Nathan Deloss Buell obtained information on our line from "BUELL FAMILY IN ENGLAND AND AMERICA" by Albert Wells 1880. Reprints are available from William R. Buell, 642 Meadowland Road, Dearborne, MI 48124, 313-561-1424.
From "History of the Buell Family in England and in America" (copy inBuell family file) William Buell and his wife, in October 1650, wereindicted in Plymouth Colony as Baptists." That same month, William et.al.were indicted for continuing their meeting from house to house on theLord's Day, contrary to the order of the Court; but it does not appearthat ny punishment was inflicted. See Baylies II, pg. 211.
From Probate Records, Early Connecticut, 1677-1687, is an abstract ofWilliam's Will dated July 26, 1681:
Bewell (Buell), William, Windsor. Died 16 November 1681. Invt. Pounds147-12-10. Taken 30 November 1681, by John Loomys sen., John Moore. Willdated 26 July, 1681.

Mrs. Mary Bewell, the widow and relict of William Bewell, Deed., Exhibited Invt. 6th March, 1681-2, before Benjamin Newbery, Commissioner.
6 March, 1681/2: It is mutually agreed By Samuel and Peter Bewell, as a final Issue betwixt them, respecting their father's will, as followeth:That all the houseing shall be equally divided betwixt them by an indifferent estimation. Also that Peter shall have Liberty to choose which end of the house he will have, both Samuel & Peter being bound to give or take according to the estimation that shall then be set upon it.Also that Peter shall have half the Home Lot as it Lyeth on the Northerly side & as expressed in the will, with the addition of the southerly orother part of the swamp or meadow Lying by the Riverett, which is to extend from the River to the Middle of the Hill or falling ground betwixt the meadow & upland, as also that all the woodlands & boggy meadow shall be settled upon both of them according to their father's will, which was presented in Court. Farther, we do also agree that the Land Lying in the great meadow shall be equally divided betwixt us both. The aforesaid parcells of Land we agree shall be & remain to us, our heirs & successors, with all the privaleges there to belonging; & farther we doagree that whatsoever of Legacy shall be due by our Father's will, it shall be discharged or payed equally betwixt us; & also that the Tools our Father Left us shall be divided according to his will written. For the true performance of what is above written we do mutually set to our hands. /s/ Samuel & Peter; witnessed by Nathan Gillett and George Griswold.
'A Genealogical Register of the Inhabitants of the Town of Litchfield,Conn.' by George C. Woodruff in 1845, mentions that Williaim was born in Chesterton, Huntingdonshire, England, about 1610; supposed to have left England in the company under the charge of Rev. Mr. Warham in 1630. He settled in Dorchester, Mass. He removed to Windsor, conn., in the fall of1635 or spring of 1636, where he died Nov. 23, 1681. He married Mary ---Nov. 18, 1640; she died Sept. 1, 1864.' It mentions their children.
