[7529] When Grandpa's job at Morton Salt shoeing horses was fazed out, he started his own blacksmith shop which was located in a building, about the size of a two-car garage, behind the bank on Main Street on the square which was also behind the ice cream shop that fronted on Ohio Avenue on the square. Many years later, the building was demolished by Dad (Harold Hoover) and Dan, and maybe Ed, for the salvage materials.

As newlyweds, Grandma and Grandpa Brickel lived in an upstairs apartment on the south end of the long brick building that forms the southwest quadrant of the Rittman square, across from the Bank.

Beside the building, is the alley that formed the northern boundary of First Street Park. The stairway to the upper-floor apartment was metal, like a fire escape stairway. The open steps always scared me, plus the roadway was right beside the stairs. The apartment was used as a dentist's office for years. We older siblings had appointments with him several times. Back then, you only went to the dentist if you had a problem. It is now an apartment again but accessed from the back of the building...no stairs now.

Grandma and Grandpa moved to a long house across the alley and adjacent to First Street Park which they rented from Mr. Young. (The Youngs donated the land for First Street Park.) Frances was born while they lived there. They then moved to the house on First Street that is two doors down the hill (south) and on the same side as the church. The other four siblings were born there.

I remember my mother telling me that she was born breech...feet first. Aunt Frances told me today that Grandpa leaned against the wall of the bedroom and pulled on Mom's feet as hard as he could. Wow! What a difficult birth that had to have been for Grandma!

They moved to the house on Diagonal Street...all 7 of them. I'll ask Aunt Frances how old she was when they moved.

Grandma and Grandpa Brickel never lived in Wadsworth during their marriage, although our Boyer grandparents lived on the edge of Wadsworth and our Auker grandparents lived west of Wadsworth out in the country. Many aunts, uncles, and cousins were scattered in the immediate area called Acme Hill.

Degory Priest

[25308] [25309]

ABT 1579 - 1 Jan 1620

Family 1 : Sarah Allerton Vincent
  1.  Mary Priest
  2. +Sarah Priest

INDEX

[25308] Degory Priest deposed that he was 40 years old in a document signed in Leiden in April 1619; this would place his birth at about 1579 in England. On 4 November 1611, he was married to Sarah (Allerton) Vincent, the widow of John Vincent, and the sister of Mayflower passenger Isaac Allerton; Isaac Allerton was married to his wife Mary Norris on the same date.
It has been suggested that Degory Priest of the Mayflower may have been the Degorius Prust, baptized 11 August 1582 in Hartland, Devon, England, the son of Peter Prust. However, given that the baptism appears to be about 3 years too late, and the fact that none of the Leiden Separatists are known to have come from Devonshire, I doubt this baptism belongs to the Mayflower passenger. Degory Priest was one of the earliest to have arrived in Leiden, so it is more reasonable to suspect he is from the Nottinghamshire/Yorkshire region, the Sandwich/Canterbury region, the London/Middlesex region, or the Norfolk region: all of the early Separatists in Leiden appear to have come from one of these centers.
Degory and wife Sarah had two children, Mary and Sarah. Degory came alone on the Mayflower, planning to bring wife and children later after the colony was better established. His death the first winter ended those plans. His wife remarried to Godbert Godbertson in Leiden, and they had a son Samuel together. Godbert, his wife Sarah, their son Samuel, and his step-children Mary and Sarah Priest all came on the ship Anne to Plymouth in 1623.
