Descends from Old Saxon Wryta family of Bayeaux, Normandy
He lived through the 30 years War of the Roses--that disastrous dynastic struggle which desolated England from the first battle of St. Albans(1455) to that of Bosworth (1485). The House of York (White Rose) fought at least 14 battles with the House of Lancaster (Red Rose), with the result that the old nobility was destroyed and the great check on the power of the King removed. Henry VII united the roses by marrying Elizabeth the Yorkist heiress and became an almost absolute King, absolutism being continued through Henry VIII and the other Tudor sovereigns. Wright is name derived from the Anglo Saxon Wyrhta, meaning industrious, strenuous, skillful. In England the Wrights were knights and baronets, and in America the family produced many governors, senators, generals, authors, inventors, aviators, editors, theologians, fictionists, judges, etc. The name is found in every section where the Anglo Saxons settled. It has been a prominent name in England for centuries especially in Suffolk, Essex, Kent, Warwickand Durham. Kelvedon Hall, Cranham Hall, Wrightsbridge, South Weald,Ropers, in Essex; Bilham House in Yorkshire; and Wright's Park in Scotland are family seats. The Irish branch was established by one who went with Cromwell to that kingdom. Characteristics of the family are truth and honor. "I would sooner accept the word of a Wright than to believe most men on their oath." Motto's borne by some branches of theWright family are "Theus Sibi," "Conscia Recti" and "Fortiter etRecter." The birth date (abt. 1424 in Upminister, Essex, England) is more knownthan his death date. There are a lot of guesses on when he died. It is thought Henry Wright (or Sir Henry Wright) had 5 children, all son,the oldest being Rev. John Wright. The other sons were William, Richard, Henry and Thomas. It is not known if the other siblings married or not.]The above taken from web site world tree BSJTK Smith's Family by Jonathan Smith

It is indeed a far cry from a twentieth century American to the marauding Vikings of the eight century, but it is an established fact that the American Wrights of today, of English ancestry, had their origin more than a thousand years ago among the Vikings of old. Some of those Vikings later became Normans. After the conquest of England by William the Conqueror, Normans became Englishmen. Six hundred years later Englishmen colonized Virginia, and became Americans.
The Wrights can trace their ancestry back to one of the barons that met with King John in 1215 to sign the Magna Carta. There were Norman Wrights in the army of William the Conqueror, and English Wrights in the War of Roses (1445-1485), with Marlborough at Ramilles (1706),with Nelson at Trafalgar (1805), and with Wellington at Waterloo (1815). Also, there were English Wrights among the cavalier settlers of Virginia, just as there were American Wrights in the Continental Army of 1776; in the Mexican War of 1846-7; wearing both blue and grey during the Civil War of 1861-65; in the1776; in the Mexican War of 1846-7; wearing both blue and grey during the Civil War of 1861-65; in the Spanish-American War of 1899;in World War I of 1914-18; in the dreadful World War II of 1941-45,and in every war fought by America thereafter.
