Burnside is to the east of St. Bartholomew's, the parish church at Colne. The Townley house at Barnside was on the top of hill bordering the bleakmoors of Yorkshire. It was built of stone and some of it remains to thisday. Barnside was granted in 1258 to the priory of St. John of Pontefractby Edmunde de Lacy. Under the priory Lawrence Townley I, the first ofBarnside, died in 1530. His son, Henry, died in 1531 and Henry's son,Lawrence, leased it until 1544 when the monasteries were dissolved byHenry VII and the manor was sold by the Crown to John Bradyll of Whalley, gentleman. In 1545 the latter Lawrence Townley and his son, Henry, boughtit from Bradyll. One sees, on looking from Barnside across the moors, theold road as it comes over from Haworth through the Haworth Gap cut in theline of hills. Haworth, the home of the Brontes, is only a few milesdistant and these same moors were vividly described in "WutheringHeights".
The Barnside Townleys left this location about the beginning of the 17thCentury for Carr Hall, which was built by Henry Townley, who died in1616, armiger, the eldest brother of the first Lawrence Townley of StoneEdge, not far to the north. The Stone Edge family of the Townleys was anoffshoot of the Townley family of Barnside. Barnside is to the east andStone Edge is to the west of St. Bartholomew's, the parish church atColne. This is the church where the Barnside and Stone Edge familiesworshipped, were christened, married and were buried. Whitaker (?) statesin, "An History of the Original Parish of Whalley and Honor of Clitheroe,in the counties of Lancaster and York," that in the time of Henry VII andHenry VII, at the restoration of the church, two chapels or chantrieswere added. One on the north side by the Banisters of Parkhill and one onthe south side by the Townleys of Barnside. The Townley chapel was builtby the first Lawrence Townley of Barnside. It remains today as well as arectangular font which bears the Townley coat of arms and the initials,L.T.
The Victoria History of Lancashire and the Court Rolls of the Honor ofClitheroe have many references to Lawrence Townley of Barnside and hisaffairs.
His death date is known from an entry in the Court Records at Colne,Court Rolls of the Honor of Clitheroe, where his son, Henry, is named thenext heir. A year later Henry was also dead, as noted at Court
