Guillaume de Briouze is recorded in lists of those present at the Battleof Hastings. He became the first Lord of the Bramber Rape by 1073 andbuilt Bramber Castle. William made considerable grants to the abbey ofSaint Florent, Saumur to endow the foundation of Sele Priory near Bramberand a priory at Briouze. He continued to fight alongside King William inthe campaigns in Britain, Normandy, and Maine.

William de Braose came into England with the Conqueror and held, at thegeneral survey, considerable estates in the counties of Berks, Wilts,Surrey, Dorset, and Sussex. JOHN OF BASING) and eventuallysole heir of her brother Edmund, and widow of Henry DE BURGHERSH (diedNovember 1348). He died between 5 June and 4 July 1376. Isabel diedOctober 1393. 12. ISABEL DE SAINT JOHN, Lady Saint John of Basing de jure suo jure,younger daughter, born about 1333 (aged 14 in 1347). She was co-heiressin 1347 to her brother, Edmund de Saint John, 3rd Lord Saint John. Shemarried (1st) before Aug. 1347 HENRY DE BURGHERSH, son and heir apparentof Bartholomew de Burghersh, Knt., 3rd Lord Burghersh, by Elizabeth,daughter and co-heiress of Thebaud de Verdon, Knt., 2nd Lord Verdun. Theyhad no issue. He died in Nov. 1348. She married (2nd) before 29 Jan.1348/9 LUKE DE POYNINGS (or PONYNGES), Knt., in right of his wife, ofBasing, Hants, Halnaker, Sussex, etc., Keeper of Pamper Forest, co.Hants, younger son of Thomas de Poynings, Knt., of Poynings, Sussex, byAgnes, younger daughter and co-heiress of Richard de Rokesley, ofWestwood (in Preston), Kent. They had one son, Thomas, and one daughter,Joan. In 1358 he was preparing to go abroad. Isabel was heiress in 1361to her nephew, John de Saint Philibert. He was summoned to Parliamentfrom 24 Feb. 1367/8 by writs directed Luce de Ponynges, whereby he isheld to have become Lord Poynings. He took 10 men-at-arms overseas in theKing's service in 1370. LUKE DE POYNINGS, 1st Lord Poynings of Basing,died testate between 5 June and 4 July 1376, and was buried at Warnford,co. Hants. His widow died 16 or 17 Oct. 1393.

SIR JORDAN FOLIOT, of Gressenhall, Elsing, East Lexham, and Weasenham, Norfolk, Norton, Fenwick, Moseley, and Cowesby, co. York, Grimston and Wellow, Notts, son and heir of Sir Richard FOLIOT, of Norton, Fenwick, Grimston, and Wellow (who died in Mar. 1299), by Margery, sister and in her issue heir of Sir Robert D'ESTUTEVILLE, of Gressenhall, Elsing, East Lexham, Weasenham, and Cowesby, and daughter of Sir William D'ESTUTEVILLE, of the same. He was about to go to Wales on the King's service in July 1277, and was ordered to join the Army of Scotland under the Earl of Surrey, 24 September 1297. He was summoned for Military Service from 12 December 1276 to 30 March 1298, to attend the King at Salisbury, 26 January 1296/7, to a Military Council, 16 September 1297, and to Parliament from 24 June 1295 to 2 November 1295, by writs directed Jordano Foliot or Folyot, whereby he is held to have become LORD FOLIOT.
He married Margery, daughter of Sir Adam DE NEUMARCHE, of Womersley, Campsall, Bentley, &c., co. York. He died shortly before 2 May 1299, aged 50 and more. His widow had livery of the manors of Grimston and Wellow, of which she and her husband had been jointly enfeoffed, 17 September 1299. She obtained., for a similar reason, the manors of Norton and Fenwick, and held the manors of Elsing and East Lexham, in dower. She died 18 April 1330, and was buried in Wendling Abbey. [CP 5:757-8]
