Wilma Fleming Haynes Notes:
Ellen was called "Mrs. Ellen Newton, widow" when at age 25 in the year1623 she emigrated from England to New England aboard the "Ann". By thetime of the 1627 division of land and cattle in Plymouth she was marriedto John Adams who came from England to Plymouth, Massachusetts aboard the"Fortune" in 1621. Ellen was probably the only female north of theChesepeake Bay with such a baptismal name. She received shares of thecattle division along with her husband John Adams and their first bornJames Adams. She and John had three children.
John Adams died 1633 probably in the epidemic of that year. She tookinventory of his property 24 Oct 1633. She was on the tax list in 1634.She and her 3rd husband Kenelm Winslow were married June 1634 atPlymouth, Massachusetts. They were parents of 4 children all born inPlymouth. At the time of her marriage to Kenelm, he put up security topay James Adams, son of her deceased husband John Adams, 5 Pounds when hebecame of age. Plymouth colony records show that this sum was paid on 26Dec. 1651.
Joyce (SCRITTERS@cs.com) Notes:
came to the US on the "Ann" in 1623.
Many sources show the first name and original surname differently.
In regard to the first name, Ellen and Eleanor are the most popular. PamEmerson, "Genealogical Dictionary" by Savage, Joyce (SCRITTERS@cs.com)and "New England Historical and Genealogical Register" all show Eleanoronly. Some sources show both Eleanor and Ellen as the name such as "NewEngland Marriages Prior To 1700" by Torrey and "The Compendium ofAmerican Genealogy", by Frederick A. Virkus. Others show only Ellen suchas "Immigrants to America Before 1750", by Frederick A. Virkus and MaryBorden - Internet Contact (Maresydotes63@aol.com). Wilma Fleming Haynesshows Ellen and Elinore.
Regarding the surname, I believe Wilma Fleming Haynes proves why there isa discrepancy. She shows that Eleanor Worden first married John Newton inEngland, came to America on the Ann in 1623, and married John Adams inabout 1625. This can explain why there are multiple surnames for Eleanor. For example, Pam Emerson, "Genealogical Dictionary" by Savage, and "NewEngland Historical and Genealogical Register" show Worden only. There areothers which showed Newton only without showing Eleanor's originalsurname. The source I have is "Immigrants to America Before 1750", byFrederick A. Virkus. Virkus redeems himself in his other work however,"The Compendium of American Genealogy", by showing both Worden andNewton. "New England Marriages Prior To 1700" by Torrey also show bothnames.
There are others who do not believe that Ellen was a Worden. Mary Borden- Internet Contact (Maresydotes63@aol.com) who is actually an employee ofPlimoth Plantation and who re-enacts the person and life of Ellen Newtonstates that she is NOT the daughter of Peter Worden and his wife Mary. She states her research department there at the 'Plantation' has proventhis.
It must be shown here that citing of the sources, "GenealogicalDictionary" by Savage, "New England Historical and GenealogicalRegister", and Volume V of "The Compendium of American Genealogy", byFrederick A. Virkus was seen on a family group sheet provided byresearcher Pam Emerson. I have not verified which bits of info (name, birth date, locations, etc) came from which source. I advise that theresearcher check these sources individually to see what each provide.
