[20150] The Bliss family seems to be descended from the Norman family of Blois, gradually modified to Bloys, Blyse, Blysse, Blisse, and in Americafinally to Bliss, dated back to the time of the Norman Conquest. The nameis not common in England. The coat-of-arms borne by the Bliss and Bloysfamilies is the same: Sable, a bend vaire, between two fleur-de-lis or.Crest: A hand holding a bundle of arrows. Motto: Semper sursum. Theancient traditions of the Bliss family represent them as living in thesouth of England and belonging to the class known as English yeomanry orfarmers, though at various times some of the family were knights orgentry. They owned the houses and lands they occupied, were free-holdersand entitled to vote for members of parliament. In the early days, ofcourse, they were faithful Roman Catholics, but later after England hadbecome Protestant they became Puritans and became involved in thecontentions between Charles I. and Parliament.

(I) Thomas Bliss, the progenitor, lived in Belstone parish, Devonshire,England. Very little is known of him except that he was a wealthylandowner, that he belonged to the class stigmatized as Puritans onaccount of the purity and simplicity of their forms of worships, that hewas persecuted by the civil and religious authorities under the directionof Archbishop Laud, and that he was maltreated, impoverished andimprisoned and finally ruined in health, as well as financially, by themany indignities and hardships forced on him by the intolerant churchparty in power.

He is supposed to have been born about 1550 or 1560. The date of hisdeath was 1635 or about that year. When the parliament of 1628 assembled,Puritans or Roundheads, as the Cavaliers called them, accompanied themembers to London. Two of the sons of Thomas Bliss, Jonathan and Thomas, rode from Devonshire on iron grey horses, and remained for some time inthe city--long enough at least for the king's officers and spies to learntheir names and condition, and whence they came; and from that time forthwith others who had gone to London on the same errand, they were markedfor destruction. They were soon fined a thousand pounds fornon-conformity and thrown into prison, where they remained many weeks.Even old Mr. Thomas Bliss, their father, was dragged through the streetswith the greatest indignity. On another occasion the officers of the highcommission seized all their horses and sheep, except one poor ewe that inits fright ran into the house and took refuge under a bed. At anothertime the three brothers, with twelve other Puritans, were led through themarketplace in Okehampton with ropes around their necks, and finedheavily, and Jonathan and his father were thrown into prison, where thesufferings of the son eventually caused his death. At another time theking's officers seized the cattle of the Bliss family and most of theirhousehold goods, some of the articles of furniture being highly valuedfor their beauty and age, since they had been in the family forcenturies. In fact, the family was so reduced in circumstances that itwas unable to secure the release of both Jonathan and his father, so theyounger man had to remain in prison and at Exeter he suffered thirty-fivelashes with a three-corded whip, which tore his back in a cruel manner. Before Jonathan was released the estate had to be sold. The father andmother went to live with their daughter who had married a man of theEstablished Church, Sir John Calcliffe. The remnant of the estate wasdivided among the three sons who were advised to go to America where theymight escape persecution. Thomas and George feared to wait for Jonathanwho was still very ill and they left England in the fall of 1635 withtheir families. Thomas, son of Jonathan and grandson of Thomas (1),remained with his father who finally died, and the son then came to joinhis uncles and settled near Thomas. At various times their sister sentfrom Engl

CHURCHILL, JOHN-John Churchill married on 18th December 1644 Hannah Pontus (PCR 2:79), daughter of William Pontus (MD 11:93). On 18th August 1645 he bought land from Richard Higgins (PCR 12-.111). On 1st May 1649 the court allowed John Churchill to dispose of the house and land of George Clarke, deceased, for the use of Clarke's daughter, Abigail Clarke (PC R 2:138). On 5th June 1651 he became a freeman (PCR 2:167), On 3rd May 1664 widow Hannah Churchill was awarded one-half of the land of her deceased father, William Pontus (PCR 4:58). John Churchill died 1st January 1662/6 3 (PCR 8:23). He made a nuncupative will, which was exhibited to the court on 3rd March 1662/63, and Abigail Clarke, age about twenty, deposed that on 24th December 1662, her kinsman John Churchill willed that his sons Joseph and Eleazer should have all his lands except fifty acres which he would give to his son John, and some land at Punckateesett that he would give his son William. His wife would have a lifetime interest in his house and lands, and he named a Hannah (see PCR 8:7 for birth of his daughter Hannah on 12th November 1649). He also mentioned unnamed children ,who might include, but not necessarily, some of the above (MD 18:40) . PCR 8:16 also lists that he had a daughter Mary born 1st August 1654 . On 25th June 1669 his widow Hannah Churchill married Gyles Rickard, Sr. (PCR 8:32). The descendants are quite numerous, and a family history is Gardner A. Churchill and Nathaniel W. Churchill, Churchill Family in America (1904), which is not well documented.

Notes for John Churchill:
From letters that James Churchill wrote in 1894, we learn that the name Churchill was originally French starting with Wandril De Leon, Lord of Coureil (later Coureilles), from Les Andelys, Normandy. Wandril then adopted the name Coureilles. Wandril's sons fought in the battle of Hastings in 1066 under William the Conqueror. For this they received land grants. The first of this name (Churchill) appears in England in 1200. Elias, born in 1275 during Edward the 2nd's reighn, got a land grant in 1325. It is unclear why John left England in his early twenties. The early 1640s are a time of great turmoil in England (Civil War) and nearly 250,000 emigrated to America in the 20 years after the Mayflower (1620). Appeared in Plymouth, 1643. John and Hannah are frequently cited in works about Plymouth colony.

From Stephen Churchill:
"According to the LDS, John Churchill and his ancestors back to his great grandfather William Churchill came from Dorset county on the south coast of England. Muston, a now non-existent town in Dorset, seems to have been the ancestral home of Churchills, according to Burke's Family Index . Based on historical maps, Muston may have been located near the present day town of Winter bourne Kinston."

Grand dau Debora Weston, bed bolster and remainder of moveable estate in-door. Toson Joseph, half of my moveable estate out doors and my hand irons.Witnesses, Samuel Weston, Joshua Delano & Hannah Alden.' It appears from registry of deeds in Plymouth that Thomas Delano is mentioned as 'Dr' and 'Tailor.' Winsor Hist of Dux mentions his being elected Constable1691."

Thomas Delano was fined for "haveing carnall coppulation" with his wife before marriage, his wife being Rebecca, the daughter of Mayflower passenger John Alden. The Delano Genealogy has the child of that relationship born on the same day his father was being sentenced (official records show that this son died on 5 April 1738 in his seventy-first year, and so would have been born circa 1667). The parents obviously felt the shame of their situation, for they named him Benoni, a Hebrew name meaning "child of sorrow," more commonly used by New England colonists for a son whose mother died at his birth.
