His wife, meanwhile, "like an Amazon and a second Penthesilea," commanded his followers in the south.She was slain in battle by Maurice of London, Lord of Kidwelly. Morgan, one ofher youthful sons by Gruffydd, perished with her, and a second, Maelgwn, was taken prisoner. But Owain and Cadwaladr, sons of Gruffydd ap Cynan, now came down from the north, destroyed Aberstwith Castle, and in the second week of October they fought along with Gruffydd ap Rhys a great battle near Aberteivi (Cardigan), in which they won a decided victory over Stephen, constable of Aberteivi and "all the Flemings, all the marchers, and all the French from Abernedd to Aberteivi." WILLIAM DE MOHUN, son and heir, was a minor at his father's death and inward to the King. For his maintenance the sum of D18 was allowed foreighteen months, presumably until he came of age, for he had livery ofhis lands in 1177. He was a benfactor of Bruton, and confirmed the giftsof hisfather and grandfather, and granted the tithe of certain of hismills in Normandy to the abbey of the Holy Trinity of La Luzerne. Heapparently went to Jerusalem on pilgrimage. He married Lucy. He died inOctober 1193, possibly abroad. His widow had for dower seven of his fees in England. Jonathan Royce, son of Robert and Mary Royce, was probably the eldest sonin this family, and must have been born about 1636, or earlier, as hedoubtless married (first) in 1656, Mary Spinning, daughter of HumphreySpinning of New Haven (see Vol. 80, p. 107 of the N. E. H. G. Reg., D. L.Jacobus), and (second) June, 1660, Deborah Caulkins. (See Caulkins IV.)She survived her husband and married (second) (???) Woodward of Lebanon,Connecticut. By the first wife, Mary Spinning, Jonathan Royce is believedto have had a daughter, Mary, who in 1678 married John Beach ofWallingford.
The record of the settlement of the estate of Jonathan Royce is found inthe New London Co. Court Records by Mr. Jacobus, under date of September22, 1690: "The inventory of the estate of Jonathan Royce was exhibited inCourt, approved and ordered to be recorded, etc." "The Inventory of theEstate of Jonathan Royce of Norwich, deceased, having been exhibited inCourt September last and power of administration was then granted to theRelict: this Court proceeds to distribution." Jonathan Royce resided atthe time of his first marriage in Stratford, removing first to New Londonand after his second marriage to Norwich, Connecticut, where the birthdates of all his children by the second wife are to be found on the VitalRecords of the town. (Vol. I, page 33.) The marriages of the children areshown by the distribution of the estate, and a still later record wasfound by Mr. Jacobus in the settlement of the estate of David Royce,youngest son of Jonathan, who died unmarried, and the Court determinedthe heirs among his brothers and sisters and the "children of hisdeceased sister, Eliza Bacchus, Habijah Wade, and Mary Beach, his halfsister." Dated January 13, 1712-13.
