According to Cokayne, (p. 525), "John Marshal, the founder of this family, owed his political advancement to his near relationship to William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, and his feudal positions to his marriage with Aline, eld. da. and coh., and afterwards sole heir, ofHubert IV de Rye, lord of the barony of Rye. John Marshal first appears on the page of history in 1197, as one of the Knights, under command of William Marshal, sent by Richard I to assist the Counts of Flanders and Boulogne against France. In 1203 he was in Normandy with King John, and in the following year went to Ireland in the service of the Earl Marshal, while the Earl went to Normandy in the service of the King. On 12 Nov.1207 he was made Marshal of Ireland. He accompanied King John on his Irish expedition, 1210. From 1213 to the end of the reign he was constantly occupied in the King's service in England; in 1215 he was with King John at Runnymede, and one of those by whose advice the King gave his assent to Magna Carta; later in the year he was one of the embassy tothe court of Rome. Returning, he accompanied the King on his march to the North, and attended him at his death at Newark, 19 Oct. 1216. Nine days later he was present at the Coronation of Henry III at Gloucester, andwas a member of the council of his uncle, guardian of the young King. He was among the 'barons' in the Earl Marshal's forces in the relief of Lincoln Castle. From this time till his death he was continually occupied in the public service in England, Ireland, or abroad."
In the footnotes, Cokayne states that "William Marshal's elder brotherJohn (whose heir he was) died in 1194, leaving a widow, da. of Adam dePort. John is described in a charter of King John as nepes WillelmiMarescalli comitis de de Penbroc. The very detailed biography of the EarlMarshal ... makes no mention of a second brother John, and the Earl's nephew appears to have had no patrimony; it is therefore probable that he was an illegitimate son of the Earl's elder brother".

The Doane Family, Vol. 2, Third Ed., 1976
Daniel Doane's marriages are not recorded in Eastham records. His 1st wife is believed by some genealogists to have been Constance Snow, daughter of Nicholas and Constance Hopkins, but no documentary evidence has been found. The assumption is based upon the names of two of his children; Constant (a son) and Constance (a daughter). The Society of Mayflower descendants has not accepted this assumption.
New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol 127 (1973) p. 102
Gilbert H. Doane, Editor Emeritus of the Register has called our attention to the erroneous statement in the first installment of the above article that Joseph Doane, husband of Mary Godfrey is a son of Hepzibah Cole Crisp Doan (The Register 126:136). The mother of Joseph Doane, son of Daniel, is Daniel's first wife, identity uncertain but presumed to be Constant or Constance, daughter of Nicholas and Constance (Hopkins) Snow. Daniel Doane did not marry Hepsibah (Cole) Crisp until after 28th July 1682, when her first husband George Crisp died. George Crisp named her in his Will and made her executrix asking brother Israel Cole and his neighbor Goodman Daniel Doane "to be helpful to my wife as overseers." She is still living by 9th October 1712 when Daniel Doane called her "loving wife Hepsibah in his Will (See A.A. Doane, the Doane Family, 1902, pp. 26-30). The authority for naming Constant Snow as the first wife of Daniel Doane appears to be in a notebook on Eastham families kept by Josiah Paine, for half a century Town Clerk of Harwich. The notebook is now in the possession of the Eastham Public Library. Mr. Paine did not cite the sources of his information unless it is word of mouth from individuals living back in his time, so it may be assumed that he found some evidence for his statement; however no one has discovered where he found it. It should be noted that the Mayflower Society does not accept lines of descent through the first wife of Daniel Doane.
History and Genealogy of the Mayflower Planters and First Comers to Ye Olde Colonie by Leon Clark Hills, Cape Cod Series, Vol II, p.51-52 - Dr. Daniel Doane b Plymouth 1636; d Eastham 20th December 1712; m. 1s ( ); m 2nd Hepsibah (Cole) Crisp.
